About the Position
The Maintenance Technician will provide maintenance support to ALS Chemex SA Pty Ltd based in Edenvale Johannesburg. ALS operates 24/7 and the Employee must be able to work shifts and flexi hours. The responsibilities of the Maintenance Technician are not restricted to the list below and is subject to change depending on business needs.
 
The role will involve ensuring that all Maintenance activities at the site is carried out in a safe and responsible manner.  
 
The position will be responsible for:  
 
Compliance:

• Practice and drive the ALS Health and Safety Foundation Standards.
• Practice the ALS company core values.
• Abide by the ALS company policies and procedures.

• Follow all ALS Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) at all times
• Always abide by local legislative requirements
• Comply with the ALS Quality Management System
• Prepare and comply with internal as well as external audits for the region

  Scope of Work:

• Familiarize with company policies, protocols, Maintenance work procedures
• Follow all HSE protocols, ensure proper housekeeping and handling of all hazardous substances
• Exercise flexibility with assisting in other lab departments with appropriate training provided
• Perform other duties as line manager sees fit, with training provided.
• Ensure that all routine maintenance tasks are attended to timeously to ensure minimal downtime on all laboratory instrumentation and auxiliary equipment
• Ensure appropriate preventative maintenance schedules are adhered and attended to, to ensure minimal instrument breakdowns
• In conjunction with the Maintenance Manager, preventative maintenance schedules periodically to ensure smooth running of the laboratory facility
• Liaise with the Maintenance Manager on equipment, stock items and plan preventative maintenance accordingly to ensure minimum downtime of the laboratory operations.
• In conjunction with the Maintenance Manager, source equipment from credible suppliers to ensure low costs on maintenance and short lead times
• May be required to attend weekly production meetings with constructive input to the overall goals of the operations unit in the absence of the maintenance manager
• Manage time and attendance in a responsible manner
• Ensure regular housekeeping inspections to assess the day to day upkeep of the site and to ensure support equipment is in functional conditions at all times.
• Maybe required to do maintenance in other ALS SSA sites as required.
• Availability to respond to off-hours emergency call outs in a timely manner
• Must be able to perform Hazard Identification and Risk Assessments (HIRA)
• Must be able to compile Safe Operating Procedures (SOP’s) for all routine maintenance tasks.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office;
• Must have the ability to perform minor building repairs such as painting, carpentry, basic plumbing etc.
• Must maintain all maintenance logbooks and maintenance records/schedules for all critical equipment on site
• Other duties as reasonably assigned. 

Core Responsibilities:

• Inspection and Diagnosis: Regularly inspect equipment, and systems to identify potential problems and ensure proper functioning. 
• Troubleshooting and Repair: Diagnose and repair mechanical or electrical issues in a variety of systems, including mechanical and electrical systems. 
• Routine Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance tasks, such as cleaning, lubrication, and component replacement. 
• Budget Management: Assist in developing and executing maintenance budget plans. 
• Inventory Management: Maintain accurate inventory records of parts and supplies. 
• Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures to ensure a safe working environment. 
• Communication: Communicate effectively with supervisors, colleagues, and contractors regarding maintenance needs and progress. 
• Preventive Maintenance: Develop and implement preventative maintenance programs to minimize downtime and extend equipment lifespan. 
• Project Management: May be involved in project planning and execution for larger maintenance or repair projects. 
• Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of maintenance work performed, including work orders, inspections, and repairs. 
• Continuous Improvement: Participate in ongoing training and development to stay current with industry standards and best practices. 
• Equipment Operation: Ensure the proper operation of a variety of mechanical machines and devices, including pumps, motors, crushers, pulverisers 

 About you: Skills and qualifications
 
To be successful in this role you must have:

• A Minimum of a Maintenance Artisan Diploma or equivalent from a recognized University or Institution 2-4 years Laboratory experience
• Technical Skills: Strong understanding of electrical, mechanical systems.
• Troubleshooting Skills: Ability to diagnose and solve problems effectively.
• Analytical Skills: Ability to interpret data and identify potential issues.
• Communication Skills: Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with others.
• Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to identify and resolve issues independently.
• Physical Stamina: Ability to perform tasks that require physical exertion, such as lifting and climbing.
• Manual Dexterity: Ability to use hand tools and equipment accurately and efficiently.
• High level of integrity and excellent communicating skills
• Ability to multitask and meet challenging deadlines
• Proven people management experience, leading, managing, directing and motivating a team
• Sound decision making, problem solving and preventive measures skills
• Excellent numerical and analytical skills
• Good Knowledge in the mining industry (Working with Jaw crushers, Mills, Dust Extractors, Scrubbers etc.)
• Able to prioritize and give accurate feedback on time
• High standards of work ethic and attention to detail

 
Salary on Offer - Non-Negotiable
TCOE R250 000.00 to R350 000.00 depending on experience and qualifications.
