About the Role
We are seeking an Assistant Accountant to join our Parish Finance Services (PFS) team in the Brisbane CBD. Reporting to the Senior Accountant, you will provide accounting, reporting and administrative support to a portfolio of parishes across the Archdiocese of Brisbane.
This is a hands-on accounting role where you'll be involved in day-to-day financial transactions, reconciliations, month-end and year-end activities, financial reporting and compliance, while building trusted relationships with Parish Priests and parish staff. It's a great opportunity for an accounting professional looking to develop their experience within a supportive finance team while working across a varied portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
As Assistant Accountant, you will:
- Process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions, including electronic payments, debtor payments and general receipts.
- Prepare and enter general journals, budgets and other financial adjustments.
- Complete reconciliations and investigate and resolve accounting discrepancies.
- Assist with BAS preparation, reporting and lodgement.
- Support month-end and year-end accounting activities.
- Assist with the preparation of annual financial statements and external audit requirements for parishes.
- Assist with fixed asset accounting, including additions, disposals and depreciation.
- Review and process supplier invoices and staff reimbursements in accordance with organisational policies and delegated authorities.
- Maintain accurate financial records and supporting documentation for allocated parishes.
- Assist with budget and forecast preparation.
- Respond to financial enquiries and provide timely, professional support to parish and internal stakeholders.
- Support the Senior Accountant and Financial Controller with financial analysis and ad hoc projects.
- Build trusted working relationships with Parish Priests, parish staff and other key stakeholders.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across financial processes and reporting.
About You To succeed in this role, you'll bring a strong foundation in accounting, excellent attention to detail and the ability to build positive working relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.
Ideally, you will have:
- A degree qualification, or be working towards a qualification, in Accounting, Commerce, Business, Finance or a related discipline.
- At least 2 years' experience in an Assistant Accountant, Accounts Officer, Finance Officer or similar accounting role.
- Experience assisting with month-end processes, reconciliations and financial reporting.
- A sound understanding of accounting principles and financial processes.
- Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including formulas, pivot tables and reconciliations.
- Experience using ERP or accounting systems, with Xero experience advantageous.
- Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
- The ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to develop effective working relationships.
- The ability to work independently while contributing positively to a collaborative team.
- An interest in identifying opportunities to improve financial processes and efficiencies.
- Have a current paid Blue Card and National Criminal History Check (or ability to obtain)
