Assistant Director of Music
Location: Cathedral of St Stephen, Brisbane CBD
Employment Type: Permanent Part-Time (24 – 28 hours; flexible with time-in-lieu or timesheets for overflow).
Work Schedule:

About the Role This is a rare and rewarding opportunity to join one of Brisbane’s most vibrant and spiritually rich music ministries at the Cathedral of St Stephen. We are seeking a talented and committed
Assistant Director of Music (ADoM) to support the Director in delivering a dynamic and meaningful music program that enhances the liturgical life of the Cathedral and the wider Archdiocese.
You will contribute significantly to the musical and spiritual culture of the Cathedral, working with ensembles of professional and volunteer musicians, and helping to shape the next generation of liturgical music leaders.
Key Responsibilities - Assist with planning and development of the Cathedral’s music program and formation of musicians.
- Conduct and rehearse Cathedral ensembles, including choirs and cantors, as required.
- Provide liturgical music accompaniment and lead music for regular Masses, weddings, funerals, and special events.
- Support concert operations: liaise with internal and external concert providers and manage logistics.
- Prepare scores, booklets, newsletters, and orders of service using music notation software.
- Maintain music library, coordinate music administration, and assist with service planning.
- Mentor and support vocal development, particularly for boys and adolescent voices.
- Serve as liaison for weddings and funerals, including review of service booklets.
- Maintain personal performance standards through regular practice.
- Musical mentorship and training of Cathedral musicians
- Be a reliable and responsive team member within a highly collaborative ministry environment.
Working Hours - 24 hours per week, usually spread over Wednesday to Saturday
- Additional hours may be required during peak liturgical seasons, with flexible time-in-lieu or timesheets for overflow.
- Option to extend role by approximately 0.1 FTE (28 hours per week) to include Chorale leadership (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Sunday)
What We’re Looking For - Extensive experience as a conductor and/or cantor
- Strong working knowledge of Catholic liturgical and choral music
- Proficient keyboard skills (organ playing not the primary focus)
- Capacity to lead ensembles, direct rehearsals, and accompany liturgies confidently.
- Familiarity with vocal development, especially for younger and transitioning voices
- Administrative skills including proficiency with notation software, score preparation, and communications.
- Excellent interpersonal and team skills
- Alignment with the Cathedral’s musical vision and liturgical ethos
- Trustworthy, self-motivated, flexible, with initiative and follow-through
