About the role:
A Customs Broker is responsible for managing the customs clearance process for imported and exported goods, ensuring shipments comply with New Zealand Customs and other relevant regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities:
- Manage the end-to-end customs clearance process for import and export shipments.
- Prepare, check and submit customs entries and declarations accurately and within required timeframes.
- Ensure correct tariff classification, valuation, duties, GST and other applicable charges.
- Review commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading/air waybills and other supporting documentation.
- Ensure shipments comply with NZ Customs, MPI and other relevant regulatory requirements.
- Liaise with NZ Customs, MPI, shipping lines, airlines, transport providers and customers to resolve clearance matters.
- Monitor shipments and proactively manage any delays, holds, inspections or documentation issues.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with customers regarding clearance status, requirements and outcomes.
- Identify and resolve discrepancies in customs documentation and shipment information.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date customs records and documentation.
- Ensure all customs transactions are processed in accordance with company policies, procedures and compliance requirements.
- Stay up to date with changes to customs legislation, regulations, tariffs and industry requirements.
- Escalate complex or high-risk customs matters to the appropriate manager or specialist.
- Provide support and guidance to internal teams on customs clearance requirements and processes.
- Identify and share continuous improvement opportunities to improve clearance efficiency, accuracy and customer service.
- Maintain a high level of professionalism, confidentiality and attention to detail when dealing with customers and regulatory authorities.

What You Bring: - Previous experience in customs brokerage, freight forwarding, logistics or a related industry.
- Sound knowledge of New Zealand Customs requirements, import/export procedures and compliance obligations.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy when reviewing documentation and processing customs entries.
- Good understanding of tariff classification, duties, GST and customs valuation.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with customers and stakeholders.
- Strong organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple shipments and competing priorities.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet clearance and operational deadlines.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to resolve customs and documentation issues promptly.
- High level of computer literacy and confidence using customs, freight and logistics systems.
- A proactive approach to identifying issues and finding practical solutions.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team while also managing tasks independently.
- High level of integrity, professionalism, accountability and confidentiality.
