About the role:
As the General Manager of Transport, you will lead the Transport strategy and operations of Fliway, SCS and its subsidiaries (The Group), ensuring sustainable growth. This role ensures the group maintains a high performing, engaged workforce while providing a safe and compliant environment for all employees. While leading the strategic and operational management of the transport function, you will ensure seamless, safe, and cost-effective operations across the group. This role focuses on delivering exceptional service quality, optimising resource utilisation, and fostering a culture of compliance, safety, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement the transport division's strategic objectives in alignment with the groups vision and goals.
- Identify opportunities for growth, innovation, and competitive advantage in the transport and logistics sector.
- Ensure efficient management of daily transport operations, including fleet management, logistics coordination, and route optimisation.
- Implement systems to monitor and improve operational KPIs such as delivery timelines, fuel efficiency, and cost management.
- Champion a safety-first culture by overseeing the development and implementation of health and safety strategies.
- Ensure full compliance with New Zealand’s transport, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Develop, monitor, and manage budgets for the transport division to ensure financial performance aligns with organisational targets.
- Drive cost efficiencies without compromising service quality.
- Partner with internal teams (HR, Finance, Operations) to ensure alignment of strategies and resources.
- Manage relationships with external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, vendors, and clients.
- Establish internal KPI’s in accordance with the groups quality approach of continual improvement, service delivery and health, safety and wellbeing.
- Looking for opportunities to provide improved productivity through systemisation processes
- Designing and planning existing and new Branches in conjunction with the Commercial Manager
- Keeping up-to-date with technological advances within the Transport industry, assessing options and making recommendations in regards to our own facilities / divisions.
- Overseeing an unrelenting service culture that supports the groups customer promise.
- Maintaining a satisfied customer base.
- Analysing and reporting deviations from budgets, making recommendation on strategies to bring expenditure in line with bottom line strategies
- Building team engagement and reducing turnover through active management of culture, in conjunction with H&S, HR and national initiatives.
- Achieving the budgeted national profitability on a monthly basis for Transport.
What you Bring: - Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, Business Administration, or a related field
- Professional Certification: Certificate of knowledge of law and practice (required)
- License: Transport Service License (TSL) (required)
- Proven track record with at least 8–10 years of experience in senior transport roles
- Demonstrated ability to lead large teams and manage complex operations in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong knowledge of transport regulations and safety compliance in New Zealand.
- Ability to create and execute strategies in line with the high level goals of the group
- Expertise in fostering a culture of safety and wellbeing alongside employee engagement and inclusivity.
- Expertise in identifying and mitigating operational risks.
- Proficient in budget management and financial performance analysis.
- Ability to influence and collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Advanced knowledge of transport management systems and tools. Ability to effectively communicate at Board level and within a leadership team
- Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills
