One of our favorite law firm clients is looking for a Business Development Manager to lead the business development efforts of key firmwide practices (including Litigation, the largest practice), industry groups, and offices (including Washington, DC, their largest office). Familiarity with environmental, natural resource, or energy law and the litigation process, strong writing skills, strategic thinking, initiative, and a proven ability to lead projects independently and collaborate effectively with lawyers across the firm are essential for success.
The firm's Marketing Department has high visibility across the firm and works directly with lawyers across seniority levels to support the firm's and individuals' marketing and business development initiatives. Their team is growing, reflective of the firm's continued growth and the value it places on business development. Each team member has exposure across the team's functions so that there are opportunities to collaborate and receive support. Plus, the team genuinely likes working together!
Responsibilities
Firmwide Practice and Industry Group Support - Work with the leaders of assigned practice and industry groups to develop, track, and advance group business development plans and goals and facilitate engagement by group members. This includes leading the marketing and business development initiatives of our Litigation group (a key practice of the firm), our energy and transportation industry teams, and others. Responsibilities include:
- Lead RFP responses and pitch meeting preparation and track outcomes.
- Attend practice and industry group meetings to provide strategic guidance and make connections with other firm initiatives.
- Provide strategic guidance on group initiatives (including events, sponsorships, new service offerings, and rankings) and collaborate with other Marketing Department members (such as our Events Coordinator and Communications Specialist) on execution.
- Track litigation outcomes and update our marketing collateral accordingly.
- Oversee key association engagement and sponsorship deliverables.
- Coordinate market research, docket watching, and competitor analysis to spot opportunities for short- and long-term growth.
- Work with our Communications Specialist to produce and maintain written/digital promotional materials, including template email and document proposals to enable rapid pursuit of opportunities.
Office Support - Serve as the lead marketing contact for the Baltimore and Washington DC offices, working to develop, track, and advance office business development plans and goals. Responsibilities include:
- Work with each office's managing principal to develop and advance the office's business development plan and support the plans of individual lawyers in the office.
- Track the office's marketing budget.
- Help facilitate office meetings.
- Oversee key association engagement by the office and lawyers affiliated with it.
- Oversee events initiated by the office with support from our Events Coordinator.
Other Areas of Support - Due to the ever-changing needs of our practice and our department, other potential responsibilities could include supporting regional business development initiatives, lawyer coaching, and assisting with projects related to the implementation of the firm's Strategic Plan.
Requirements - At least 5+ years of law firm business development experience
- Understanding of litigation practice (key focus on one or more of: environmental, toxic tort, class action, appellate, administrative) and experience with litigation research and docket tracking tools (e.g., Lex Machina, CourtLink).
- Familiarity with environmental/natural resource or energy legal practice.
- Experience leading RFP responses.
- Strategic thinking.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication.
- Initiative, responsiveness, follow-through, and strong project management skills.
- Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively, to advance and execute projects.
- Ability to form effective working relationships/rapport with lawyers and staff firmwide.
- Fluency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- College degree or equivalent, or demonstrated career experience
Preferred - Experience with InterAction.
- Familiarity with experience management platforms.
Work Environment Hybrid model with a minimum of three in-office days per week. Some travel may be required for training and meetings.
