Council is seeking a Leading Hand to lead and support operational crews delivering essential infrastructure and maintenance works across the region. From roads and drainage to parks and public spaces, no two days are the same as you coordinate crews, resources and plant to achieve safe, efficient and high-quality outcomes for the community.
  
This permanent full-time position offers the opportunity to combine your practical civil construction experience with frontline leadership responsibilities. You'll mentor team members, champion workplace safety and play a key role in delivering projects and services that keep the Hinchinbrook community connected and thriving. What Council Offers:

• 76 hour fortnight with roster variations depending on the position (9-day fortnight - RDOs in accordance with Council policy)

General Salary Information
This position is classified as Level 5 + construction and leading hand allowances under the Hinchinbrook Shire Council Local Government Officers (Stream B) Certified Agreement.

The salary is $69,376 per annum plus superannuation.  $35.1091 per hour.

Our Ideal Candidate
We are seeking a proactive and safety-focused leader with experience working in civil construction, road maintenance, infrastructure or related operational environments. You have the ability to coordinate resources, support team performance and foster a positive workplace culture. A strong commitment to workplace health and safety, effective communication skills and the ability to lead by example are essential. Experience supervising crews, operating plant and equipment, and delivering quality outcomes in a local government or similar environment will be highly regarded.
  
Key Responsibilities

• Lead, mentor and supervise operational crews undertaking civil construction and maintenance works.
• Coordinate the delivery of roads and infrastructure maintenance programs throughout the district.
• Ensure works are completed safely, efficiently, on schedule and to required quality standards.
• Manage resources, plant, materials and contractors to achieve productive work outcomes.
• Promote a positive safety culture, strong customer service and continuous improvement across the team.

Key Selection Criteria

Mandatory:

• Proven ability to lead and supervise work teams, including contractor staff, in a civil maintenance and/or construction environment.
• Extensive experience in civil construction and maintenance activities, including roadworks, drainage, concrete works and associated infrastructure.
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and plans, including accurately setting out works.
• Demonstrated knowledge and application of Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) requirements relevant to civil construction and maintenance activities.
• Current Construction Induction Card (White Card).
• Current Queensland “MR” Class Driver Licence.

Desirable:

• Local government experience in roads, civil or infrastructure works.
• Certificate IV Civil Construction Supervision;
• Current First Aid Certificate;
• Traffic Management Implementation (TMI) or equivalent qualification; and
• Chainsaw and Vegetation Management Competencies.
• Queensland “HR” Class Driver Licence.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

This is a hands-on operational role. Applicants must be physically capable of safely performing manual handling and other strenuous tasks, including lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting and working in confined spaces or at heights.
