The Opportunity
Hinchinbrook Shire Council is seeking a Mechanical Pump Fitter to join our Water and Waste team. This role focuses on maintaining and improving critical water and wastewater infrastructure, including treatment plants, pump stations and associated assets. You will be responsible for ensuring plant and equipment operate reliably, contributing to the continuous delivery of essential services to the community.

General Salary Information: The salary is $85,490 per annum (including applicable allowances) + superannuation. ($43.2642 per hour)
Key Responsibilities - Undertake planned and reactive maintenance, fault finding, repair and overhaul of mechanical plant, pumping stations, valves, pipelines, and associated equipment;
- Perform precision fitting, machining, alignment, and assembly of mechanical components using lathes, mills, and hand tools;
- Maintain and repair Council plant and equipment including motors, gearboxes, bearings, couplings, and hydraulic systems;
- Fabricate mechanical components, brackets, guards, and assemblies to specification using workshop and site-based equipment;
- Install and commission mechanical equipment ensuring correct operation and compliance with safety and manufacturer requirements; and
- Provide guidance and on‑the‑job training to an apprentice in a practical trade environment, demonstrating safe work practices and correct trade techniques.
See the Position Description for a more extensive list of key responsibilities.Our Ideal Candidate You are a qualified Mechanical Fitter or Fitter and Turner with hands-on experience maintaining and repairing pumps, pipelines, valves and rotating equipment, ideally within water, wastewater or similar industrial environments. You are confident working in operational treatment plants and pump stations, including exposure to confined spaces and critical infrastructure.
You bring strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills, a proactive approach to maintenance, and a commitment to Workplace Health and Safety in high-risk environments. You are reliable, adaptable and able to respond to breakdowns and on-call requirements, while maintaining accurate records and working collaboratively within a team to support essential community services.

Mandatory: - Trade qualification as a Fitter & Turner / Mechanical Fitter, or equivalent recognised qualification;
- Demonstrated experience undertaking mechanical maintenance, repair, and installation activities within water and/or wastewater infrastructure, or similar process‑based industrial environments;
- Experience working safely in operational plant environments, including exposure to confined spaces, live services, and critical infrastructure (training can be provided where required);
- Sound understanding of Workplace Health and Safety requirements as they apply to water and wastewater facilities;
- Sound computer and administrative skills for required workplace documentation and records; and
- Current Queensland ‘C’ Class Drivers Licence.
Desirable: - Basic welding and fabrication experience;
- Competency in using maintenance management systems or completing maintenance documentation; and
- Relevant high-risk work licences (e.g. dogging, rigging, forklift) or willingness to obtain.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements: Applicants must be able to safely and competently carry out strenuous labouring and manual handling activities. The position will require the employee to carry out physical tasks which may include manual handling, repetitive bending, kneeling, twisting and/or squatting, lifting, working in confined spaces, and working at heights.
