The Opportunity
This role provides strong leadership in delivering high-quality library services across the Hinchinbrook Shire, overseeing the day-to-day operations of Council’s two libraries. It is responsible for guiding and developing staff and volunteers, delivering inclusive programs that promote literacy and lifelong learning, and building strong community partnerships to enhance engagement. The position also ensures effective management of collections, facilities, and budgets, while contributing to strategic planning and continuous improvement, in alignment with Council priorities and State Government public library standards.

- 72.5 hour fortnight with roster variations depending on the position (9-day fortnight - RDOs in accordance with Council policy)

General Salary Information This position is classified as Level 5 under the
Hinchinbrook Shire Council Local Government Officers (Stream A) Certified Agreement.
Salary is $93,941 per annum + superannuation ($49.8363 per hour)
Key Responsibilities - Lead day-to-day operations of Council’s library service network, including rostering, programming and overseeing skills development of team members and volunteers to deliver services and activities;
- Develop and implement a range of literacy programs suitable for all ages in the library and collaborate with other Community and Cultural Services team members and key stakeholders in the development of service-wide programming;
- Promote library resources and activities by working with the Community and Cultural Services team and Council’s media staff to produce and deliver promotional communications, and by organising displays and activities for events such as First 5 Forever program, Children’s Book Week, Library and Information Week, Senior’s Week, and Meet the Author Days;
- Contribute to the planning, development and implementation of library policy and strategic direction across the region; and
- Ensure all employees and volunteers work as a cohesive, supportive and high functioning team. This includes providing ongoing supervision, support, staff development and training, and working through regular performance development reviews and behaviour, performance or conduct concerns.

Mandatory: - Highly developed communication, consultative, interpersonal and negotiation skills, with the ability to liaise with staff, government agencies and the public with tact and understanding;
- High level proficiency, skills, experience and aptitude in word processing, document review and formatting of correspondence, policies and procedures, use of databases, electronic document management systems, intermediate spreadsheet skills and presentation design;
- Demonstrated current or previous experience in library operations, preferably from a regional perspective in public libraries or similar customer experience environment;
- Demonstrated supervisory and leadership experience and understanding of developing, coaching and positively influencing the knowledge and skills of a small team;
- Working with Children Check (Blue Card) or the ability to obtain prior to commencement; and
- Current Queensland ‘C’ Class Drivers Licence (minimum P1).
Desirable: - The possession of vocational, tertiary or postgraduate qualifications in a Library and Information Sciences related discipline; and
- Eligibility for associate membership of the Australian Library and Information Association or willingness to attain.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements Applicants must be able to safely and competently carry out manual handling activities. The position will require the employee to carry out physical tasks which may include manual handling, repetitive bending, kneeling, twisting and/or squatting, lifting and working at heights.
