The Opportunity
Council is seeking a skilled and motivated Fitter to join our Water and Sewerage Treatment team in an ongoing full‑time capacity. This hands‑on role provides mechanical maintenance, repair, fabrication and installation services across Council’s water and wastewater treatment plants, pump stations and associated infrastructure. This critical role ensures mechanical systems operate safely, efficiently and in compliance with legislative and operational requirements, supporting the delivery of essential services to our community.

General Salary Information: The salary is $85,490 per annum and $43.2642 per hour (including applicable allowances) plus superannuation.
Key Responsibilities - Undertake planned and reactive maintenance, fault finding, repair and overhaul of mechanical plant, pumping stations, valves, pipelines, and associated equipment;
- Perform precision fitting, machining, alignment, and assembly of mechanical components using lathes, mills, and hand tools;
- Maintain and repair Council plant and equipment including motors, gearboxes, bearings, couplings, and hydraulic systems;
- Fabricate mechanical components, brackets, guards, and assemblies to specification using workshop and site-based equipment;
- Install and commission mechanical equipment ensuring correct operation and compliance with safety and manufacturer requirements; and
- Provide guidance and on‑the‑job training to an apprentice in a practical trade environment, demonstrating safe work practices and correct trade techniques.

Our Ideal Candidate We are seeking a trade‑qualified Mechanical Fitter who demonstrates strong technical capability, a commitment to workplace safety, and the ability to work effectively in operational plant environments. You will have experience maintaining and repairing mechanical assets such as pumps, motors, valves and pipelines, with the ability to respond to breakdowns and operational incidents in a timely and professional manner. You are a reliable team player with good communication skills, a proactive approach to asset care, and a willingness to participate in on‑call and emergency response activities when required.

Mandatory: - Trade qualification as a Fitter & Turner / Mechanical Fitter, or equivalent recognised qualification;
- Demonstrated experience undertaking mechanical maintenance, repair, and installation activities within water and/or wastewater infrastructure, or similar process‑based industrial environments;
- Proven ability to maintain and repair mechanical assets commonly used in water and wastewater operations, including pumps, motors, valves, pipelines, and associated equipment;
- Experience working safely in operational plant environments, including exposure to confined spaces, live services, and critical infrastructure (training can be provided where required);
- Sound understanding of Workplace Health and Safety requirements as they apply to water and wastewater facilities;
- Sound computer and administrative skills for required workplace documentation and records;
- Current Queensland ‘C’ Class Drivers Licence.
Desirable: - Experience working in a local government, water, wastewater, utilities, or heavy industry environment;
- Basic welding and fabrication experience;
- Competency in using maintenance management systems or completing maintenance documentation; and
- Relevant high-risk work licences (e.g. dogging, rigging, forklift) or willingness to obtain.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements: Applicants must be able to safely and competently carry out strenuous labouring and manual handling activities. The position will require the employee to carry out physical tasks which may include manual handling, repetitive bending, kneeling, twisting and/or squatting, lifting, working in confined spaces, and working at heights.
