Public Spaces Team Member
2 x Full Time Fixed Term Positions to 15 April 2027
The Opportunity
These opportunities have become available due to the retirement of a value team member and internal staff movements. As a Public Spaces Team Member, you’ll play a key role in maintaining, enhancing and presenting Hinchinbrook Shire’s parks, gardens and public amenities. Working within the Natural Assets Department, you’ll contribute to clean, safe and attractive public spaces that reflect Council’s commitment to service quality and community pride. This hands‑on position offers a variety or outdoor work, and the chance to make a visible difference across the Shire.
What Council Offers:
- 76 hour fortnight with roster variations depending on the position (9-day fortnight - RDOs in accordance with Council policy)

General Salary Information: This position is classified as Level 2C under the
Hinchinbrook Shire Council Local Government Officers (Stream B) Certified Agreement.
The salary is $63,638 per annum plus superannuation. $32.2054 per hour.
Our Ideal Candidate We are looking for a reliable, safety‑focused team player with experience in parks, gardens or similar outdoor maintenance work. You take pride in delivering high-quality results, communicate respectfully with colleagues and the public, and can follow directions while managing multiple tasks. You are physically capable of labouring duties, comfortable using tools, equipment and basic digital devices, and motivated to contribute positively to community spaces.
Key Responsibilities - Maintain Council’s Parks and amenities within the Shire’s public spaces, such as playgrounds, shelters, footbridges, seating and similar public infrastructure;
- Assist in the construction of fencing, paths, railings, signage and other infrastructure within Council’s public spaces:
- Collect and process tree and garden refuse via mulching, composting or waste facility disposal:
- Operate and maintain small plant and equipment—including lawn mowers, brush cutters, whipper snippers, blowers and similar tools—in a safe, efficient and compliant manner, ensuring all pre-start checks, servicing and storage requirements are met;
- Assist other Public Spaces team members with the care and maintenance of planted areas and the application of herbicides and pesticides; and
- Maintain plant, equipment and assets used in daily operations and carry out housekeeping of all work areas, ensuring all public areas are maintained in a clean and safe condition.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements Applicants must be able to safely and competently carry out strenuous labouring and manual handling activities. The position will require the employee to carry out physical tasks which may include manual handling, repetitive bending, kneeling, twisting and/or squatting, lifting, working in confined spaces, and working at heights.

Mandatory - Demonstrated experience in the maintenance of parks and gardens, with skills in construction or asset repairs considered an advantage;
- Sound interpersonal skills with the proven ability to build positive working relationships with team and communicate with members of the public in a courteous and effective manner;
- Proven ability and willingness to follow directions and safely manage multiple tasks within the required timeframes;
- Demonstrated physical ability necessary to safely undertake manual handling and labouring requirements of the role;
- Basic computer literacy skills;
- General Construction Induction Card (mandatory); and
- Current Queensland ‘C’ Class Drivers Licence (minimum P1).
Desirable: - Agricultural Chemicals Distribution Control license (ACDC) (or willingness to obtain); and
- Level II Chainsaw accreditation.
