As part of our disaster support team, you’ll work alongside Council staff and emergency services to assist with critical response and recovery efforts. You’ll bring strong communication skills, a proactive attitude, and a willingness to work collaboratively under pressure.
No prior experience is required – full training will be provided. What matters most is your commitment to your community and your readiness to lend a hand when it’s needed most.
General Salary Information
This position is classified as Level 1 under the Hinchinbrook Shire Council Local Government Officers (Stream A) Certified Agreement.
Casual rate is $39.173 per hour (inclusive of casual loading) + applicable shift penalties.
Key Responsibilities
- Respond to incoming calls from residents during disaster events in a professional, calm and empathetic manner.
- Provide accurate and timely information based on official Council and disaster agency updates.
- Record and log call details and service requests in Council systems (e.g. Guardian).
- Escalate urgent or high-risk calls in accordance with established procedures.

- Excellent verbal communication skills, including the ability to remain calm under pressure;
- Proven customer service experience;
- Ability to quickly learn and apply Council procedures, messaging, and systems;
- Competent in the use of computers and digital systems (e.g. data entry, Microsoft Office);
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends and public holidays during disaster activation periods; and
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in recording information.
Desirable - Knowledge of local geography and community services in the Council area.
