Job Title: Principal AWS Cloud Application Engineer

Location: Inner Southern Suburb, Sydney

Salary: Level 4 salary  + super

This is a senior technical leadership opportunity for an experienced AWS Cloud Application Engineer who enjoys staying hands-on with technology.

The business is seeking a Principal Engineer to provide technical direction while continuing to contribute directly to software development, cloud architecture and engineering projects.

You will initially lead a small team with the opportunity to help grow the team over time.

• Lead and mentor a small team of software and cloud engineers.
• Remain hands-on and contribute to software development, architecture and code reviews.
• Design, develop and maintain scalable AWS cloud applications.
• Lead cloud architecture and technical design decisions.
• Develop and maintain cloud infrastructure using Terraform / Infrastructure as Code.
• Drive CI/CD, DevOps and automated software delivery practices.
• Build and support containerised applications using Docker and Kubernetes.
• Establish software engineering standards, best practices and development processes.
• Mentor engineers and contribute to the growth of the engineering team.
• Collaborate with product, hardware and software engineering teams.
• Troubleshoot complex technical issues across application, backend and cloud environments.
• Improve system scalability, reliability, security and performance.
• Modernise existing systems and development practices where appropriate.
• Contribute to the company's broader technology and product strategy.

• 10-20 years of software engineering experience, with significant cloud application experience.
• Strong hands-on experience with AWS cloud services and architecture.
• Proven experience designing and developing production-grade cloud applications.
• Strong software development and programming fundamentals.
• Experience with Terraform or comparable Infrastructure-as-Code technologies.
• Strong experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
• Solid understanding of CI/CD and DevOps practices.
• Experience with distributed systems and scalable application architectures.
• Previous experience leading, mentoring or technically guiding engineers.
• Strong system-design and software architecture capabilities.
• Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
• Comfortable being a hands-on technical contributor, rather than moving exclusively into management.
