The Role - HEAD CHEF
The primary role of the Head Chef of the Orchard Early Learning Centre in Forestville is to manage the day-to-day operations of a busy kitchen for our 152 place Early Learning Centre. The Centre is located along Warringah Road with a bus stop available next to the centre for ease of public transport.
You will also have the opportunity to be mentored and guided by Tawyna Bahr, leading food expert and Executive Chef of Orchard Early Learning Centre, and work with other like-minded chefs within Orchard Early Learning Centres.

Orchard Early Learning Centre prepares children for a life of learning and well-being. Our purpose-built Forestville Service has been designed to ensure the very best in care, education, and nutrition. Our service caters to 152 children per day across 7 rooms aged 6 weeks to 5 years old. Early childhood research tells us that the earlier positive food relationships are formed the more likely children are to enjoy fresh, seasonal, delicious food into adulthood. Therefore our Orchard has pear trees and apple trees, pineapples, and figs, we have children’s edible gardens, sensory gardens, herb gardens, chooks, and bees.
We are seeking a passionate chef to prepare 5 meals a day from our nutritionally approved seasonal menus in accordance with our unique food philosophy. Our chef will need to have passion for a paddock-to-plate philosophy.
Essential Criteria
- Certificate in III in commercial cookery
- Certificate in Safe Food Handling
- Working with Children Check
- Have a sound understanding of the National Quality Standards/ Food Safety Regulations around food prep and kitchen safety
- The ability to work at a fast pace to keep a busy kitchen moving
- Excellent communication skills
- Available Monday to Friday
- Experience in a similar role
- Experience working with dietary requirements and allergies
- Be creative with a focus to produce quality food and work towards a zero-wastage plan
- Creative, and passionate about food and providing high standards of food service
- Energetic and a positive attitude
- Strong knife skills
Responsibilities - Support the health and well-being of the children through planning and preparing nutritious meals and snacks
- Prepare meals to meet the needs of children with special dietary requirements and allergies
- Order food supplies in consultation with the Service Director and Executive Chef
- Ensure safe and hygienic storage, handling, and preparation of food and drinks
- Work as part of a team to create a safe, caring, and educational place for children
- Participate in the services parent events from time to time.

Orchard Early Learning Centre St Ives has an amazing outdoor play area, the centre is spread across two levels, with defined Nursery and Preschool levels, and the bright and airy rooms flow directly onto the outdoor learning environments, immersing children in our Paddock to Plate philosophy. The service operates from 6.30 am - 6.30 pm and is located on Mona Vale Road opposite Bridgedine College, close to public transport and local street parking available
