Position: Senior Finance Officer
Start: ASAP
Duration: 4-6 months
Salary: $39.05 per hour plus superannuation
Location: Taree / Hybrid
 
Primary Purpose of the Position
Reporting to the Team Leader Financial Accounting, the Senior Finance Officer – Taxation Compliance will support and contribute to the Financial Accounting Team achieving outcomes in line with organisational and departmental strategies, objectives, vision and values.
 
The position is responsible for assisting with the completion of annual financial accounting and taxation compliance requirements and ensuring the integrity of  ledgers by undertaking ledger reconciliations.
 
Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities:

• Ensure day-to-day operations proceed smoothly, financial transactions are recorded in a timely manner, reconciliations are completed within required timeframes, and financial returns and reports are completed and lodged.
• Prepare and reconcile monthly Business Activity Statement (BAS) including gross wages and other reporting requirements.
• Review, develop, maintain and update internal accounting procedures and systems (including RCTI arrangements) relating to GST ensuring compliance with Financial Management Regulations, GST legislation and best practice accounting procedures.
• Maintain a high-level knowledge of relevant legislation in respect of GST and its application and advise on matters to staff and management.
• Ensure monthly financial reports are received to meet GST obligations and consolidated where necessary.
• Ensure that the GST status of fees and charges is correct by preparation of the annual fees & charges schedule and undertake audits of system parameters.
• Ensure the accurate collection of FBT data and the preparation of the annual Fringe Benefits Tax Return.
• Liaise with Payroll ensuring FBT reports are produced in accordance with staff contracts and agreements and interpreted correctly to meet FBT guidelines.
• Provide interpretation and advice on FBT and other tax related matters.
• Provide advice to Fleet in respect of the FBT status of fleet vehicles ensuring appropriate lease and commuter agreements and fees can be met to minimise  FBT liability.
• Day to day ownership of novated and associate leases and related accounting for employee deductions and lease payments, including monthly reconciliation of income and expenditure by employee.
• Review and reconcile monthly Payroll Tax lodgement ensuring that all relevant wages and salaries are captured, reported and appropriate payment authorised.
• Prepare and lodge Diesel Fuel Rebate Claims ensuring appropriate systems are in place and operating for the accurate collection of data.
• Ensure the accurate collection of taxable payments annual report (TPAR) data and the preparation of annual TPAR.
• Prepare reconciliations of nominated Balance Sheet accounts in accordance with adopted procedures and timeframes.
• Process journals to correct costings as required.
• Prepare and provide information, data and workpapers to auditors as part of the external audit of financial statements.

 
Desirable Criteria

• Diploma level qualifications in Accounting / Finance or related discipline.
• Relevant experience in the processing / recording of financial transactions in an accounting / finance-based environment including the completion of financial reconciliations and the preparation of generic financial reports.
• Demonstrated high level knowledge of the application of GST, FBT, Payroll Tax and other taxation obligations in a local government environment.
• Demonstrated experience in the interpretation of documentation such as legislation, industrial awards, regulations or standards relevant to the role being undertaken.
• Demonstrated experience in Microsoft Office products (particularly Microsoft Excel) and recognised accounting software packages with a preference for Technology One Financials with the ability to quickly become competent in the use of new systems / programs.
• Current Class C Drivers Licence
