National Safety Manager - Equestrian Australia

Equestrian Australia (EA) is the peak body for the administration of Equestrian Sport in Australia. The organisation manages four Olympic / Paralympic sports and four non-Olympic sports. Each discipline carries an inherent level of risk and EA requires a national safety manager to ensure appropriate safety practices are implemented to minimise the risk to participating members.

What is Equestrian Australia looking for in their National Safety Manager?
This role will be responsible for the leadership and delivery of appropriate safety and risk management training and education programs, including the necessary protocols to optimise safety within equestrian sport. There is a need to ensure World Wide best practise in safety is monitored, and initiatives developed appropriate for Equestrian sport in Australia. A focus will also need to be placed on the monitoring and compliance of EA rules and policies. This person will be the central liaison point internationally with the Fédération Equestrian Internationale (FEI), and domestically with State branches and discipline committees on all matters relating to EA safety practices and reporting.
People & Stakeholder Management
- Develop, lead and implement all safety initiatives relating to equestrian sports;
- Provide training and education programs on safety to constituent disciplines, State branches and LOCs
- Monitor and ensure compliance to EA rules and policies
- Review the existing safety and risk management practices and policies
- Undertake market research and analysis to identify suitable initiatives for consideration for implementation in Australia
- Manage approved safety and risk management initiatives including budget, resources and timeframes making recommendations where appropriate
- Ensure an up to date biosecurity plan is in place and communicated to all stakeholders
You will be expected to have –
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, industry experts, and the member community to enhance and strengthen EA’s reputation and profile
- Identify appropriate mechanisms by which information about safety and risk management can be shared within the community with the aim of upskilling participant members, disciplines, and member branches
- Organisation of the main task force of working group including eventing safety, and different safety working groups (human doctors, vets, Course design, Officials training, OCs training etc.)
- Organisation of yearly safety seminars
- Contribute to the EA “Make Eventing Safer” Project Committee and provide secretariat support
- Assist the CEO with risk and safety related media enquiries
- Develop and lead community wide (athletes, parents/family, coaches, judges, officials, stewards, OCs, volunteers etc.) education programs to support safety initiatives.
You will have the following skills/experience–
- Experience in a similar role
- Tertiary qualification in business management or similar
- A strong understanding of risk management practices
- Exceptional leadership and communication
- High level administration experience
- Good working knowledge of the principles of compliance
- Equestrian Knowledge an advantage.

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to enable appropriate responses to member and key stakeholder enquiries, as well as write compelling proposals and reports
- Ability to achieve objectives while whilst coping with high pressure, tight deadlines and multiple, competing priorities
- Demonstrable experience in developing, implementing, and sustaining safety initiatives programs in complex and diverse environments
- Evidence of being a skilled researcher with the ability to identify salient points and quantifiable data to support views
- Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, industry experts and the member community to enhance and strengthen EA’s reputation and profile
- Self-motivated, with the ability to problem solve and use initiative
- Possess a calm and confident manner with the ability to influence and persuade
- Attention to detail at all times
- A reliable team player with a hands-on, can-do ethos
- Willingness to work flexible hours, present to forums, and attend meetings as required
- A competitive salary will be offered dependent on skills and experience
- While the equestrian head office is located in Sydney, there is flexibility around the location where this role can be based. Some domestic travel will be required
