Rebuilding Shattered Lives – Supporting people of refugee background to recover from torture and other traumatic events Your Impact The Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture, also known as Foundation House (FH), is a leader in delivering specialist trauma-focused services that work with the strengths and resilience of refugees, their families, and communities to rebuild lives shattered by torture and other traumatic events.
The Mental Health and Wellbeing (MHW) Area delivers evidence-based best practice interventions that are safe, person-centred, effective and connected, and are trauma-informed and trauma-focused. Services are culturally safe and responsive to individuals and their families.
The Complementary Therapies (CT) team is an integrated part of the Mental Health and Wellbeing area, providing natural therapies and bodywork alongside the work of counsellor advocates and other practitioners. CT has been a part of Foundation House for more than 30 years; a unique program which has an emerging knowledge base for the use of natural therapies and bodywork in survivors of torture and trauma.
The Role The Complementary Therapist/Acupuncturist position will work as part of the CT team at Foundation House, working with clients across all FH programs. The position is office based and provides a range of trauma informed therapeutic services to clients, with a particular focus on acupuncture, cupping, massage and body work. Assessments and therapeutic approaches consider the client’s refugee background with their understandings and experiences of healthcare.
Key responsibilities include:
- Provide therapeutic services and relevant expertise in acupuncture, acupressure, cupping, massage and bodywork practices. The emphasis is with sensitivity and awareness of cross-cultural and trauma context.
- Provide therapeutic interventions primarily to clients referred by Counsellor Advocates and to work collaboratively with referrers as a part of a shared care approach.
- Provide a trauma informed approach to natural therapies and bodywork health assessments of clients referred to the Complementary Therapies. This includes taking detailed health histories to enable appropriate and relevant services to be delivered.
- Advise on appropriateness and suitability of referred clients to participate in the Complementary Therapy program in liaison with Mental Health and Wellbeing staff.
- Advocate on behalf of clients experiencing barriers to accessing allied health and medical services to enable services to be better understood and accessed as per client needs.
- Develop relationships and work collaboratively with referrers including counsellor/advocates and mental health clinicians where there is shared care of a client.
The role is available as an ongoing, part-time (0.8 EFT) position and will be based out of both our Dandenong and Broadmeadows (Dallas) offices.
What you’ll need to successfully apply To be successful, you will need to positively respond to the below selection criteria:
- Tertiary qualification is a requirement such as a Bachelor of Health or Applied Science - Acupuncture, or Master of Applied Science - Acupuncture.
- Professional Practitioner registration required with AHPRA/CMBA.
- Experience conducting comprehensive complementary health assessments.
- Provision of professional service to clients from a CALD background and some experience of working with survivors of trauma, marginalised or disadvantaged populations (either in natural therapies or a related discipline).
- Excellent communication abilities, including experience working with interpreters and liaising with external medical and allied health professions.
- Understanding of health determinants and the impact on individual wellbeing.
- Demonstrated understanding of the health system and services and how they operate in Victoria.
- Demonstrated commitment to human rights and social justice issues.
