Rebuilding Shattered Lives – Supporting people of refugee background to recover from torture and other traumatic events Your Impact The LGBTQIA+ Project is situated in Foundation House’s Community and Sector Capacity Building (CSCB) program area. CSCB is an innovative program area designed to facilitate and support the development, growth, and empowerment of communities of refugee backgrounds to recover from pre-arrival trauma and resettle positively. CSCB teams work to strengthen these communities across Victoria, helping them to thrive.
The LGBTQIA+ Project is a Foundation House initiative designed to support LGBTQIA+ refugees, asylum seekers and forcibly displaced people, to recover from pre-arrival trauma, live as their true selves, resettle positively, and to build strong communities together to support each other to thrive.
The project operates on multiple levels, integrating key components aimed at addressing the unique needs of LGBTQIA+ individuals from forcibly displaced backgrounds, with a focus on activities that promote strength, autonomy and resilience, through capacity building and support mechanisms.
The Role The Community Capacity Building Practitioner (LGBTQIA+) is responsible for delivering place-based community capacity building initiatives for LGBTQIA+ forcibly displaced people as directed by the LGBTQIA+ Project Officer.
The role has a strong focus on facilitating community group programs that support individual affirmation, social connection, and relational based trauma recovery for LGBTQIA+ community members. These groups will be delivered in partnership with LGBTQIA+ cultural and community groups and other contracted lived experience practitioners, and promote strength and autonomy, as well as the development of peer support networks.
Key responsibilities include:
- Facilitate social groups in our three key regions that promote social connection between LGBTQIA+ forcibly displaced people to reduce social isolation and support the development of peer support networks.
- Establish and co-deliver psychosocial and therapeutic groups in partnership with Counsellor Advocates, other organisations, and other contracted lived experience workers.
- Support the facilitation of the LGBTQIA+ Program Lived Experience Steering Committee to ensure the program meets the needs and experiences of LGBTQIA+ forcibly displaced people.
- Deliver co-design sessions with the LGBTQIA+ Program Lived Experience Steering Committee to develop resources in relation to working with LGBTQIA+ forcibly displaced people.
- Build new and strengthen established local partnerships with community associations, leaders, community members and key stakeholders, to support community capacity building initiatives and outcomes.
- Network with services engaging with LGBTIQA+ forcibly displaced people in Victoria and identify potential partnerships.
- Assist the LGBTQIA+ Project Officer to facilitate peer support spaces for LGBTQIA+ lived experience workers from across multiple sectors.
Available is a part-time or full-time (0.8-1.0 EFT), 24-month fixed term contract position. While primarily based in the Brunswick office, the role will require frequent travel to and work from our offices in North, West and Southeast Melbourne.
What you’ll need to successfully apply To be successful, you will need to positively respond to the below selection criteria:
- Professional, volunteer or personal experience of supporting LGBTQIA+ forcibly displaced people.
- Demonstrated understanding of the needs, issues and experiences of forcibly displaced LGBTQIA+ people.
- Demonstrated understanding of the effects of complex trauma on individuals, families and communities, particularly in an Australian settlement context and especially for LGBTIQA+ forcibly displaced people.
- Confidence and experience in group facilitation and community engagement principles.
- Expertise in cross-cultural communication, practice and development.
- A current, valid Victoria drivers licence.
- Multi-lingual ability and lived experience of being LGBTQIA+ and from a forcibly displaced background is desirable
