Ko wai mātou | Who are we:
Matatū Aotearoa | Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand is the professional body for kaiako | teachers and provides direction for the teaching profession from early childhood education through primary and secondary schooling in English and Māori medium settings. Matatū Aotearoa is a values-based organisation that honours Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
We are committed to lifting the status and mana of the teaching profession, learning collaboratively with kaiako | teachers, supporting quality leadership, and teaching, and strengthening the regulatory and disciplinary framework for the profession in a fit for purpose way.
Mō te tūranga | About the role:
We’re looking for a dynamic and experienced Pou Whakahaere | Manager Policy and Implementation to lead high-quality policy development and strong implementation that supports effective teaching and learning across Aotearoa. Reporting to the Pou Kaiāwhā | Deputy Chief Executive – Professional Services, you will lead a talented team and play a key strategic role within the Council.
You will:
- Lead strategic policy development focused on enhancing teaching quality and learner safety.
- Influence national education policy through collaboration with government agencies, stakeholders, and the profession.
- Identify key strategic and policy challenges and opportunities and question current approaches to develop both operational policy and independent policy advice.
- Engage with the policy team and the other teams to deliver business outcomes that support the Council’s strategic direction.
- Lead new thinking and consider opportunities to respond to workforce sustainability challenges.
- Actively build strong relationships across the sector, especially with Māori stakeholders, to inform and shape policy work.
He kōrero e pā ana ki a koe | About you: To be successful in this role, you’ll be a strategic thinker and experienced policy leader who is passionate about improving educational outcomes across Aotearoa. You will have a depth of experience leading policy development or policy projects, ideally within complex or politically sensitive environments.
Your understanding of how policy translates into practice allows you to work confidently across both strategic and operational spaces. You are a strong communicator who can influence across sectors, build meaningful relationships with diverse stakeholders, and lead a high performing team.
With a strong grasp of the machinery of government and experience working with or alongside Ministers’ you’ll be confident navigating complex challenges, guiding your team with clarity, and delivering high-quality, evidence-based advice that supports the teaching profession and learner wellbeing across Aotearoa.
