Waahine Mentor – Start Well
Turuki Health Care is a kaupapa Maaori organisation delivering integrated health, wellbeing and social services across Taamaki Makaurau. Our mission is to provide high-quality, accessible and affordable healthcare to whaanau, with a dedicated focus on equity and culturally responsive care.
We are seeking a passionate and committed Waahine Mentor to join our Start Well team. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about walking alongside maamaa and whaanau, supporting them to build confidence, strengthen their capacity and move toward thriving futures.
Applicants must be currently residing in Aotearoa, have the legal right to work and have relevant local work experience.
Te whiwhinga mahi – The opportunity
Start Well is a multidisciplinary team of Clinical Nurse Specialists, Social Workers, Mentors and a Team Leader, working alongside whaanau experiencing complex social and health challenges. As a Waahine Mentor, you will play a key role in supporting maamaa and whaanau as they transition from intensive support into a phase of mentorship and increasing independence.
This is a full time, community based role working primarily face-to-face with whaanau in their homes and communities.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Building trusted, meaningful relationships with maamaa and whaanau
- Walking alongside whaanau to navigate challenges and strengthen confidence
- Supporting whaanau to access services and opportunities
- Working collaboratively with Social Workers and Nurse Specialists
- Applying a strengths-based, whaanau-centred and trauma-informed approach
- Maintaining accurate and timely documentation
- Contributing to team learning and continuous improvement
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako – Skills, experience and attributes To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Relevant New Zealand-based experience in health, social services, education, justice or community work
- Experience working alongside maamaa, rangatahi and/or whaanau
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to build trusted relationships with Maaori and Pacific communities
- Understanding of strengths-based, trauma-informed and culturally responsive practice
- Ability to navigate health and social service systems and manage a dynamic workload
- A high level of integrity, professionalism and respect for confidentiality
- A genuine passion for improving Maaori and Pacific health and wellbeing outcomes
- Alignment with kaupapa Maaori and Whaanau Ora approaches
- A warm, adaptable and self-motivated approach, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Full NZ Driver’s License
A basic understanding of te reo Māori and knowledge of Pacific values and practices is highly advantageous.
