WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
As the Legal Officer you will contribute to the consistent interpretation and application of legislation relating to the Coal Long Service Leave Scheme and addressing legal and regulatory issues that arise for Coal LSL.
You will:
- Provide legal advice to the organisation under the guidance of a Senior Legal Counsel, focusing on legal authority relating to employer compliance under the Coal LSL scheme and the implementation of Coal LSL’s regulatory and administrative processes;
- Demonstrate a sound understanding of the legislative regime and legal authority that governs the Coal LSL scheme
- Complete allocated tasks to a high standard, including seeking guidance as required and proactively reporting on case load and progress
- Assist with evidence review, undertake legal research and analysis and prepare memorandums and correspondence, under the guidance of a Senior Legal Counsel
- Actively contribute to engagement with employers and employees participating in the Coal LSL scheme on legal and regulatory issues
- Engage with external legal providers and assist with preparing briefs, reviewing advice and supporting its practical interpretation and application
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to support performance of regulatory functions
This is a 15-month contract role, based in Newcastle.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING To be successful in the role of Legal Officer, you will ideally have previous legal experience with the ability to read and interpret legislation and case law to apply to a given context.
Your background will demonstrate your:
- Admission to practice as a Solicitor in New South Wales
- Ability to produce quality legal interpretation and advice using strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strength in making confident decisions and recommending appropriate actions
- Capacity to analyse complex issues and implement strategic solutions that support organisational goals
- Attention to detail and methodical work processes
- Capability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders
- Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to produce high-quality briefs, policies, correspondence, and other legal documentation
- > 12 months legal experience preferred
