About the Role 
As we continue to grow, we’re looking for an experienced Payroll Team Lead to oversee our end-to-end payroll operations across multiple countries and help us lift capability, compliance and systems maturity. 
Reporting to the Head of People Operations, you will lead payroll delivery across Australia, New Zealand and Canada, supervising one Payroll Officer locally and providing oversight of payroll processed in Canada (by a member of the Finance team). 

You’ll be responsible for ensuring payroll accuracy, compliance and continuous improvement across a workforce of approximately 1,600 casual employees and 200 permanent employees. 

Some of your key responsibilities will include:

Payroll operations & compliance 

• Oversee weekly pay runs across Australia, New Zealand and Canada 
• Provide guidance and leadership to Payroll Officers 
• Oversee and support with accurate statutory and compliance reporting (Superannuation, KiwiSaver, WorkCover, payroll tax, and month-end payroll reporting) 
• Support team members and leaders with payroll queries and issue resolution 
• Conduct regular payroll and rostering audits to ensure award and legislative compliance 
• Step into payroll processing when required, including leave and occasional public holiday coverage 
• Support workers compensation and payment related queries in partnership with H&S 

Payroll systems 

• Maintain deep working knowledge of payroll systems (Employment Hero for AU/NZ and ADP for Canada) 
• Lead payroll system changes, upgrades and optimisations in collaboration with IT 
• Design, test and implement system improvements, automation and reporting enhancements 

Governance & continuous improvement 

• Interpret and apply Modern Awards and employment legislation 
• Oversee cyclical compliance activities such as award wage increases 
• Identify and address payroll and IR compliance gaps 
• Review and improve payroll policies, procedures and controls 
• Support audits, due diligence and compliance initiatives 

About You 
You’re a payroll professional who balances precision with people-first leadership. You’re calm under pressure, confident working across complex payroll environments, and motivated by doing things properly and efficiently. 

You’ll bring: 

• Minimum 5 years’ experience overseeing or coordinating payroll in a medium to large organisation 
• Strong experience working with Modern Awards and employment legislation 
• High numeracy and exceptional attention to detail 
• Confidence working with payroll systems, including testing and optimisation 
• A proactive, problem-solving mindset and willingness to step outside your comfort zone 
• Strong written and verbal communication skills 
• A collaborative, patient and nonjudgmental leadership style
