Our retail client in Buffalo, NY, is seeking a Customization Specialist to join their team!
 
This is an onsite/full-time/direct-hire position

 
About the Role
This is a hands-on role combining graphic design, personalization, engraving, UV printing, 3D technology, and jewelry production. The Customization Specialist will help transform customer artwork, photographs, handwriting, fingerprints, and other meaningful designs into finished jewelry while also supporting new product development and production needs.
 
The ideal candidate has a strong eye for detail, enjoys both creative and technical work, and is comfortable learning and operating specialized equipment.
 
This position will work closely with our Creative, Merchandising, Customer Success, and Production teams to ensure custom orders are produced accurately, efficiently, and to our client's quality standards.
While experience with our specific equipment and technologies is valuable, we are willing to train the right candidate who demonstrates strong design skills, technical aptitude, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn.
 
Key Responsibilities
Customization & Personalization

• Prepare customer artwork and digital files for personalized jewelry production.
• Create and process custom designs including photographs, artwork, handwriting, fingerprints, logos, and other customer-supplied content.
• Review customization requests for accuracy, quality, positioning, sizing, and production feasibility.
• Make appropriate adjustments to artwork to achieve the best possible finished product.
• Ensure customized pieces meet established quality standards before completion.
• Help troubleshoot unique or complex customization requests.

UV Printing

• Operate our UV printing system to produce customized and production jewelry.
• Prepare, size, position, and process artwork for UV printing.
• Adjust files and production settings to achieve consistent image quality and placement.
• Perform quality-control inspections on completed pieces.
• Conduct routine equipment cleaning and maintenance.
• Help develop fixtures, jigs, templates, and processes that improve consistency and production efficiency.

Laser Engraving & Scratch Engraving

• Operate laser engraving & scratch engraving equipment for custom and production jewelry.
• Prepare artwork and engraving files for customer orders.
• Ensure proper alignment, sizing, depth, and finished appearance.
• Laser engrave brass molds and other production components used within our manufacturing process.
• Develop and refine engraving templates to improve accuracy and repeatability.
• Troubleshoot engraving issues and continually improve production processes.

3D Design, Scanning & Prototyping

• Assist with the design and development of new charm prototypes for customer requests, special projects, and potential catalog additions.
• Use 3D scanning technology to capture existing objects, jewelry, and customer-supplied pieces.
• Recreate or redesign vintage, discontinued, or customer-provided charms using scanning and 3D modeling.
• Work with Rhino or similar 3D modeling software to prepare and modify models.
• Utilize 3D sculpting software when appropriate for more organic designs.
• Operate 3D printers to produce prototypes, fixtures, and other components.
• Refine digital models based on production requirements and feedback.

Quality & Production

• Inspect work throughout the customization process to maintain high standards for accuracy and craftsmanship.
• Use precision measuring equipment when necessary to verify dimensions and placement.
• Identify potential production or quality issues before products move to the next stage.
• Maintain organized digital files, templates, artwork, and production documentation.
• Follow established procedures while helping identify opportunities to improve them.
• Balance quality and attention to detail with the need to meet production schedules and customer delivery expectations.

Process Improvement & Innovation
We are continually expanding our personalization capabilities and looking for better ways to produce customized jewelry.
 
The Customization Specialist will be encouraged to:

• Identify opportunities to improve customization workflows.
• Develop new fixtures, templates, and production methods.
• Help test new equipment, software, materials, and technologies.
• Recommend ways to improve quality, consistency, and production speed.
• Work with Creative and Production to develop new customization capabilities.
• Help document successful processes so they can be repeated and scaled.

Cross-Functional Collaboration
This role interacts with several areas of the company and will:

• Work with Creative to prepare and refine artwork.
• Collaborate with Merchandising and Product Development on new charm concepts and prototypes.
• Work with Customer Success to clarify unusual or technically challenging custom orders.
• Coordinate with Production to ensure customized products move efficiently through manufacturing.
• Communicate potential production challenges before they affect customer orders.
• Provide technical feedback on what can be achieved through engraving, printing, scanning, and other personalization methods.

Qualifications

• Candidates do not need experience with every piece of equipment or technology listed above. We are willing to provide training to someone with the right combination of creativity, technical aptitude, attention to detail, and willingness to learn.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to precision and quality.
  • Creative mindset with strong visual and spatial awareness.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop required.
  • Experience with 3D modeling software; Rhino experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with 3D sculpting programs such as Forger or ZBrush is a plus.
  • Experience with 3D scanning, including laser or structured-light scanning, is a plus.
  • Experience with 3D printing, particularly Formlabs equipment, is a plus.
  • Experience operating laser engraving, UV printing, rotary engraving, or similar production equipment is highly desirable.
  • Strong computer and file-management skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects and customer orders.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical and creative challenges independently.
  • Comfortable working with both computers and hands-on production equipment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Jewelry, manufacturing, product development, graphic design, CAD, or related experience is a plus.
