RedGum – The Waldorf School of Central Victoria is an established and growing Steiner school set on 18 acres of natural bushland in Muckleford (near Castlemaine), serving approximately 156 students from Kindergarten to Class 8. RedGum offers a contemporary Steiner education grounded in strong relationships, connection to place, and developmentally aligned learning that nurtures capable, creative, thoughtful, and compassionate young people.
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Head of School (HoS) is the educational leader and designated Responsible Person, accountable for the quality, integrity, and delivery of RedGum’s educational program. Working collegially with the College of Staff, and in close partnership with the Business Manager, this pivotal role will steward educational vision, cultural vitality, compliance, and the long-term sustainability of the school.
Head of School holds clear accountability for educational quality, compliance and leadership decision‑making, while working in a collegial Steiner governance model.
In this role, you will:
- Articulate and deliver a clear, future-focused educational direction aligned with Steiner/Waldorf pedagogy and RedGum’s purpose.
- Lead and continuously improve teaching, learning, assessment and reporting, aligned to the Australian Steiner Curriculum Framework and Victorian requirements.
- Ensure the program reflects core Steiner principles including Main Lesson, rhythm, class teacher continuity (where possible), differentiation, and rich festival/cultural life.
- Drive a whole-school approach to student wellbeing and behaviour and act as Child Safety Officer in line with the Child Safe Standards.
- Provide pedagogical leadership, mentoring and support induction into Steiner education, and lead performance and development processes.
- Support effective and collaborative collegial processes while maintaining clear leadership accountability and alignment to strategic priorities.
- Foster a warm, inclusive school culture, support festival life, build strong relationships with families, and deepen community connections.
- Fulfil responsibilities as Responsible Person, ensuring compliance with VRQA and relevant regulatory requirements, with clear reporting to the Board.
About You
You are an experienced educational leader with: - Deep commitment to and clearly articulated alignment with Steiner/Waldorf education, with a strong understanding in a contemporary Steiner/Waldorf educational context.
- Demonstrated educational leadership and the ability to mentor and develop staff.
- Strong understanding of child development, wellbeing, and child safety obligations.
- Confidence working with Boards and governance structures, and knowledge of Victorian regulatory requirements (VRQA).
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills across a close school community.
- VIT registration (or eligibility) and a valid Working With Children Check (or ability to obtain).
- Experience as a Head of School/Principal and/or experience in a Steiner/Waldorf setting is highly regarded.
