We’re working with an innovative Auckland technology company developing advanced systems for the space industry, and we're looking for a Software Engineer to join them on an initial three-month contract.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who loves actually building things. You could be a recent graduate with an impressive university or personal project behind you, or an experienced engineer looking for an interesting short-term challenge. Years of experience aren't the deciding factor, we're looking for capability, enthusiasm and evidence that you can turn an idea into something that works.
The challenge is to bring data from multiple pieces of experimental equipment together into one central interface. Think of a mission-control-style console: numerous signals and instruments feeding into one place where engineers can initiate experiments, monitor what's happening and review the data afterwards.
You'll need to think beyond the screen. Understanding where the data comes from, how the hardware connects and how that information gets into the database and interface will all be part of the challenge.
What you will do
- Develop a full-stack interface to initiate, monitor and review experimental data
- Bring multiple data sources and pieces of physical equipment into one central GUI
- Build the backend and database functionality needed to organise experimental data
- Rapidly prototype, with the goal of having an initial working GUI within two weeks
- Work hands-on with engineers and hardware through development, testing and refinement
What we are looking for
- Strong Python skills, combined with C++ or LabVIEW experience
- Frontend capability such as Tkinter, Qt, React, web development or similar technologies
- An understanding of backend development, databases and how data moves between systems
- A practical, curious mindset and willingness to get hands-on with hardware when required
- Examples of things you've built – university, personal and commercial projects all count
What’s in it for you
- Work on unusual technology being developed for applications in the space industry
- Take genuine ownership of a project and see your software interacting with real hardware
- Open to graduates through to senior engineers – ability matters more than job titles
- Build something tangible quickly, then spend the remainder of the contract making it better
- Join a collaborative engineering environment where enthusiasm and initiative are valued
This is an initial three-month contract based in Onehunga, Auckland. Some technical support will be available, but you'll be trusted to take ownership, investigate problems and work out how to make the system come together.
If you're earlier in your career, don't be put off by the breadth of the role. If you're strong in Python, have built something you're proud of and enjoy figuring out how software interacts with the physical world, we'd be keen to hear from you.
