We are seeking a skilled professional to join a well-established Christchurch-based operation, where you'll play a key role in maintaining the reliability, safety, and performance of a large and diverse fleet of heavy vehicles that support essential community services.


About the Role:

Based in Hornby, Christchurch, this position involves servicing and maintaining a fleet of heavy trucks ranging from 12–25 ton vehicles. The fleet includes specialized equipment fitted with hydraulic lifters, hooks, and gantries, making strong hydraulics experience highly desirable. Experience in automotive electrical diagnostics is also advantageous.

Reporting to the Workshop Supervisor, you will be responsible for ensuring vehicles remain roadworthy, compliant, and available for daily operations. You'll be involved in everything from preventative maintenance and scheduled servicing through to diagnostics, breakdown response, and major repairs.


Key Responsibilities:

• Carry out servicing, maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on heavy diesel vehicles and equipment
• Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical faults
• Ensure all vehicles meet regulatory compliance and safety standards
• Complete preventative maintenance in line with scheduled servicing requirements
• Conduct thorough vehicle inspections and safety checks
• Respond to breakdowns and rostered call-outs when required
• Manage workflow and job documentation through a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS)
• Requisition parts, consumables, and workshop materials as required
• Maintain accurate maintenance records and vehicle history documentation
• Conduct daily inspections of workshop tools and equipment to ensure functionality and accountability
• Work collaboratively with supervisors and team members to minimize vehicle downtime
• Provide technical support and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, including fleet transition projects where applicable

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• Trade qualification in Heavy Automotive Engineering (Level 4) or equivalent Heavy Diesel Trade Certificate
• Proven experience maintaining and repairing heavy diesel vehicles in a commercial or industrial environment
• Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills across mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems
• Experience working with hydraulic equipment and systems
• Automotive electrical and electronic fault-finding experience (preferred)
• Experience using CMMS or similar maintenance management systems
• Welding and fabrication skills would be highly regarded
• Current New Zealand Class 4 Driver's License (advantageous but not essential)
• Strong understanding of health, safety, and vehicle compliance requirements
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively both independently and within a team
