About the opportunity
The General Counsel provides authoritative legal advice and strategic counsel across all areas of Healthdirect Australia’s operations. As the organisation expands into complex areas including mental health and AI‑enabled digital health services, the role plays a critical part in identifying and managing legal risk, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting confident executive decision‑making.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide timely, authoritative legal advice to the CEO, Board and Executive across all areas of Healthdirect’s operations
- Identify and manage legal risk, particularly in emerging areas such as mental health telehealth, AI‑enabled services and digital health platforms
- Lead regulatory compliance and governance, including privacy, health records, telehealth and evolving AI governance requirements
- Advise the Board and Audit & Risk Committee on legal, governance and compliance matters
- Oversee complex commercial contracts, government funding agreements, procurement and insurance arrangements
- Act as legal advisor on major strategic initiatives and new service delivery models
- Lead and develop a small in‑house legal team and manage external legal counsel relationships
You will bring:
You are a seasoned legal professional with strong judgement, executive presence and a practical, solutions focused approach. You enjoy working closely with senior stakeholders and are comfortable navigating ambiguity and change. You will bring the following essential criteria:
- Significant post admission experience (typically 10+ years), with substantial senior in house experience
- Demonstrated experience advising at Executive and/or Board level on complex legal, risk and compliance matters
- Strong experience with privacy law and health information obligations (Privacy Act 1988 and APPs)
- A proven track record managing government funding agreements, complex commercial contracts and procurement
- Experience leading or mentoring legal teams and managing external counsel
- Admission as a legal practitioner in an Australian jurisdiction with a current practicing certificate
- Desirable experience includes Health, digital health, mental health or virtual care environments
