About the opportunity
Healthdirect Australia is seeking a Technical Writer on a 12 month contract with a passion for precision and readiness. In this role, you will develop and maintain high-quality work instructions for our front-line clinicians, ensuring documentation is accurate, up-to-date, and delivered in line within fast-paced sprint and release cycles. You will support critical customer-facing health services – including the Healthdirect Helpline and GP Helpline. This is a unique opportunity to thrive in an agile environment, where your work directly underpins effective service delivery and go-live readiness for programs that help Australians access trusted health information and care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Align Documentation with Release Cycles: Continuously update and deliver work instructions to meet rapid sprint and release timelines, so that all user guides and procedures are ready for each go-live.
- Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Work closely with Product, Clinical, Operations, and Release teams to gather information on upcoming changes. Attend agile planning/review sessions to identify documentation impacts and ensure every system update or new feature is clearly reflected in the instructions.
- Ensure Go-Live Readiness: Validate and proofread documentation during and after deployments, swiftly incorporating late-breaking changes to maintain 100% accuracy at launch. Proactively communicate any risks or last-minute adjustments to stakeholders, safeguarding smooth service delivery.
- Documentation Quality & Governance: Develop clear, user-friendly work instructions and process guides, adhering to our style standards and governance protocols. Implement version control and regular reviews to ensure consistency and timely updates across all materials.
- Continuous Improvement: Drive innovation in documentation practices – streamlining processes, improving templates, and enhancing the user experience for our frontline clinicians. Incorporate feedback and lessons learned from each release to continually improve release readiness and documentation efficiency.

We are looking for a
seasoned Technical Writer who can seamlessly navigate a dynamic, release-driven environment. Key background and experience include:
- Agile & Release Expertise: Substantial experience (5+ years) in technical writing within an Agile environment, including hands-on involvement in sprint-based release cycles. You have a track record of delivering documentation under tight timeframes and adapting to shifting schedules or scope changes.
- Technical Documentation Skills: Proven ability to create and maintain comprehensive technical documents – such as work instructions, process flows, and FAQs – that align with frequent software releases and system enhancements. You excel at translating complex technical and clinical information into clear, concise content.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with experience working closely with cross-functional teams (e.g. product managers, developers, clinicians, and operational staff). You’re adept at gathering input from diverse stakeholders and ensuring documentation readiness for go-live through each release cycle.
- Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail in editing and proofreading, ensuring accuracy and consistency in every document. You’re comfortable managing version control and maintaining high quality standards, even as you juggle multiple concurrent releases.
- Adaptability and Initiative: A proactive mindset and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, agile setting. You quickly absorb new information, respond to late-emerging changes with composure, and continuously seek ways to improve documentation processes (experience in health or government sectors, and exposure to modern tools or AI enhancements in documentation, will be advantageous).
This Technical Writer role is critical to ensuring our frontline teams have the information they need, exactly when they need it. If you are passionate about documentation excellence in an agile, release-focused environment, we invite you to bring your expertise to Healthdirect Australia and help support better health outcomes for Australians.
