Project Manager – Medium Voltage (Union Electrician PM)
Virginia, Maryland & DC
Full Time, Direct Hire Position
$70-$80/hr Plus OT
Home-Based with Travel | Company Vehicle Provided
We are seeking a Project Manager with a strong union electrical background to lead medium voltage field operations across construction and utility environments. This role blends hands-on medium voltage expertise with project execution, union labor oversight, and workforce planning, supporting complex electrical infrastructure projects throughout the U.S. East region.
Role Responsibilities Medium Voltage Project Execution
- Oversee and support the installation of medium voltage cable systems within underground pathways, switchgear lineups, and transformer installations.
- Direct the planning and coordination of large-scale MV cable pulls, ensuring safe and efficient use of hydraulic and electric pulling equipment.
- Manage field execution involving rigging systems, anchor points, telehandlers, skid steers, pulleys, and specialty cable installation tools in active construction environments.
- Ensure work is safely performed in confined spaces, outdoor conditions, and energized utility settings, including substations with overhead conductors.
- Apply advanced knowledge of medium voltage equipment, including switches, breakers, grounding systems, PPE requirements, and live-dead-live work practices.
- Interpret and apply medium voltage one-line diagrams and electrical schematics, including systems with redundant feeds and multiple energy sources.
- Ensure proper energy isolation and control, following switching procedures, lockout/tagout, PPE standards, and all applicable regulatory requirements.
Union Labor & Field Resource Management - Provide direct oversight of field labor in compliance with applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA) across multiple union jurisdictions.
- Manage recruitment, staffing, and workforce planning for medium voltage projects, coordinating union referrals and collaborating with HR when labor is sourced outside local halls.
- Ensure labor staffing aligns with project budgets and forecasted manpower requirements.
- Partner closely with General Foremen to adjust crew composition, manage composite crews, and provide coaching and leadership support.
Scheduling, Forecasting & Compliance - Maintain and manage labor forecasting and demand planning tools, tracking workforce assignments by project and week throughout the year.
- Schedule field resources to support safe project delivery while targeting standard 40-hour workweeks where possible.
- Monitor and enforce compliance with maximum overtime thresholds, including weekly and daily hour limits, and coordinate relief staffing when required.
- Serve as the primary contact for 24/7 on-call dispatch coordination, ensuring adequate field coverage for customer needs.
- Track daily field movements and maintain up-to-date organizational and resource deployment records.
Safety, Reporting & Financial Coordination - Work in close coordination with Safety leadership to ensure full compliance with safety training, PPE standards, toolbox talks, and equipment requirements.
- Enforce consistent use of daily job reporting, ensuring accurate alignment between field activity, payroll timecards, and project cost tracking.
- Collaborate with Project Management teams to assess percent-complete progress, support work-in-progress reporting, and enable timely invoicing.
- Provide subject matter expertise to Project Management and Sales teams when supporting project planning or proposal development.
Qualifications - Extensive medium voltage experience required (4,160V–38kV)
- Background as a Union Electrician, General Foreman, or Field Supervisor transitioning into project management
- Strong understanding of construction-based electrical operations and union labor environments
- Proven ability to manage crews, schedules, and compliance across multiple active projects
- Comfortable working in utility, substation, and high-energy electrical environments
