Job Title: Substation Physical Design Engineer
Company: Our client
Location: REMOTE
Employment Type: Full-Time
About Our Client Our client is an engineering and consulting firm specializing in mission-critical power infrastructure for data centers, industrial clients, and advanced manufacturing facilities. They deliver high-reliability electrical designs that support the world’s most demanding environments—ensuring uptime, efficiency, and scalability.
Position Overview The Substation Physical Design Engineer will lead the design and layout of high-voltage substations for hyperscale and enterprise data center clients seeking to own and operate their own on-site substations.
This role focuses on the physical and structural design of substation components—integrating cutting-edge electrical, civil, and mechanical systems to support resilient, high-availability power infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop physical layout designs for substations (typically 69 kV–345 kV), including equipment arrangement, bus configurations, and clearances.
- Design substation site plans, grounding systems, conduit and cable routing, and control buildings.
- Create detailed design packages, including general arrangements, sections, elevations, and material lists.
- Coordinate with internal disciplines (civil, structural, protection & controls, and electrical systems) to ensure a cohesive design.
- Perform design reviews and ensure compliance with client standards, utility requirements, and applicable codes (NESC, IEEE, NEC, NFPA 70E).
- Interface directly with data center clients to translate conceptual requirements into engineered solutions.
- Support equipment specification and procurement, including transformers, breakers, buswork, insulators, and switches.
- Collaborate with utilities on interconnection requirements and approval processes.
- Provide technical support during construction, including submittal review, RFIs, and field coordination.
- Mentor junior engineers and designers in substation physical design practices.
Qualifications Required - Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent discipline).
- 5+ years of experience in substation physical design, preferably in utility or industrial settings.
- Proven proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar CAD tools.
- Working knowledge of NESC, IEEE, and NEC standards.
- Experience with grounding, lightning protection, and bus design principles.
- Strong understanding of substation equipment (transformers, breakers, disconnects, CTs/PTs, bus supports, etc.).
- Excellent communication skills for interfacing with clients, utilities, and contractors.
Preferred - Experience with data center or mission-critical power systems.
- Familiarity with utility interconnection and ownership transfer standards.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or EIT on track for licensure.
- Proficiency with 3D modeling tools (e.g., Bentley Substation, Civil 3D, or Revit).
- Knowledge of NFPA 70E safety standards and utility substation construction methods.
