The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.

Your Impact
As a volunteer at the Aboriginal Legal Service (NSW/ACT), you’ll play a key role in supporting the Criminal Law Practice by providing high-quality legal, administrative and operational assistance to solicitors, paralegals and staff. You’ll contribute to culturally safe service delivery for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients while developing practical legal experience within a community-controlled legal service. Each day, you will:

• Provide legal, administrative and operational support to solicitors, paralegals and administrative staff, including legal research, drafting, file management and document preparation.
• Assist with case preparation and Court-related activities, including reviewing briefs and legal materials, preparing briefs and exhibits, and attending Court under appropriate supervision.
• Liaise professionally with Courts, police and other external stakeholders as directed, while providing accurate administrative, filing, document service and registry support.
• Maintain high standards of confidentiality, ethical conduct, professional boundaries, accurate record-keeping and compliance with ALS policies and procedures.
• Work collaboratively with ALS staff to support effective service delivery, demonstrating flexibility and responsiveness to operational requirements.
• Demonstrate respect for Aboriginal cultural practices and contribute to culturally safe engagement with clients, families and communities, consistent with ALS values and Code of Conduct.

  
Your Story & Strengths
You are a skilled and motivated volunteer who understands and respects the cultural, social and historical context shaping the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You bring strong legal, administrative and organisational capabilities, alongside a genuine commitment to culturally safe service delivery, community and justice. Key strengths include:

• Current enrolment in, or recent completion of, a Law degree or relevant tertiary qualification, or demonstrated interest in the legal profession and community legal services.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with well-developed organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively, with strong attention to detail, sound judgement and accurate record-keeping.
• Demonstrated commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, ethical conduct and maintaining appropriate professional boundaries, including when representing or using the ALS name.
• Knowledge and appreciation of the cultural, social and community needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, with demonstrated respect for Aboriginal cultural practices and culturally safe service delivery.
• Current Working with Children Check (NSW) or Working with Vulnerable Peoples Check (ACT), or willingness and ability to obtain.
