About the role:
Reporting to the Deputy Secretary, Policy and Insights, the Director, Data and Insights is responsible for shaping the Ministry’s approach to data, evidence, and insight.
You will oversee the collection, analysis, and use of Pacific data to inform decision-making across the Ministry and wider government system. The role brings together strategic oversight, delivery of high-quality data and research outputs, and influence across stakeholders to strengthen how data supports better outcomes for Pacific peoples.
This role leads a high-performing team and ensures data and insights are translated into clear, accessible advice for senior leaders and decision-makers. You will also build capability across the Ministry to support evidence-based thinking and practice.
The midpoint of this salary range is $161,919. (Band 19). Starting salary will be based on knowledge, skills and experience the successful candidate brings to the role. This is a full time, permanent position based in Wellington.
About you:
You will bring strong experience working at a senior level in data, insights, or analytical roles within complex environments, ideally in the public sector.
You will be comfortable operating across both strategic and delivery contexts, with the ability to influence, connect across systems, and make complex information meaningful for decision-makers.
You will bring:
- Significant experience using data and insights to inform strategy, policy, or service delivery decisions
- Proven experience leading and developing teams and delivering results through others
- Strong ability to translate complex data and research into clear, practical advice
- Experience working with large or complex datasets and understanding their strengths and limitations
- Experience designing or overseeing analytical and research work
- Strong relationship management and influencing skills across government and stakeholders
- Understanding of public sector processes and the machinery of government
- Knowledge of data governance, privacy, and ethical use of data
- Pacific communities and culturally responsive practice
