ABOUT THE ROLE An established national housing and support provider is looking to expand its team in Coventry, recruiting Complex Needs Housing Support Workers to work with individuals who require additional support to overcome homelessness and build more stable, independent lives.
Working within a small team, you will provide practical and emotional support to residents facing a range of challenges, including homelessness, substance dependency, mental health difficulties and other forms of social disadvantage. The role combines day-to-day support work with housing management responsibilities, helping residents maintain their accommodation whilst working towards longer-term independence.
There are permanent and temporary vacancies available. Candidates who already hold a current DBS may be able to start immediately, although applications are also welcome from those who need to complete a new DBS check or are working through a notice period.
Opportunities are also available for experienced candidates looking to step into a Team Leader position, provided they have previous leadership experience within supported housing.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Take responsibility for a designated group of residents, providing regular one-to-one support and developing individual plans based on their circumstances, strengths and aspirations.
- Work with people facing challenging and often overlapping issues, helping them address barriers linked to homelessness, substance misuse, mental health and social exclusion.
- Carry out regular assessments to understand residents' support requirements, identify changes in circumstances and recognise any emerging safeguarding or welfare concerns.
- Help residents develop practical life skills, improve their confidence and work towards managing their own accommodation and everyday responsibilities.
- Encourage positive decision-making and promote safer behaviours, providing appropriate advice around harm reduction and the potential consequences of certain choices.
- Build effective working relationships with external professionals and partner agencies, ensuring residents can access the wider services and assistance they need.
- Maintain accurate records, update support plans and ensure all relevant information is documented in line with organisational procedures.
- Create a supportive environment where residents feel encouraged to make progress, take responsibility and work towards sustainable outcomes.
- Follow safeguarding procedures and ensure any concerns are recognised, recorded and escalated appropriately.
HOUSING & PROPERTY MANAGEMENT
- Assist with the day-to-day running of the accommodation, helping to ensure properties are occupied, maintained and managed effectively.
- Support the assessment and onboarding of new residents, including reviewing referrals, completing relevant paperwork and identifying any immediate support or risk considerations.
- Explain tenancy conditions, house rules and accommodation expectations, ensuring residents understand their responsibilities from the outset.
- Monitor rent payments and work with residents to resolve any payment issues, helping them understand their financial commitments and avoid falling into arrears.
- Provide assistance with benefit applications, budgeting and general financial management to help residents maintain their tenancies.
- Undertake regular property checks and inspections, identifying maintenance issues and ensuring accommodation remains safe and compliant.
- Encourage residents to take ownership of their living environment, developing their ability to report repairs, maintain their accommodation and manage a tenancy independently.
- Identify where additional housing-related guidance is needed and incorporate this into ongoing support and development plans.
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
- Previous experience working with vulnerable adults or individuals with complex support requirements.
- A good understanding of the challenges associated with homelessness and multiple disadvantage.
- Experience using trauma-informed or psychologically informed approaches when supporting individuals.
- Basic knowledge of housing benefit processes and an understanding of tenancy-related responsibilities.
- Ability to manage a caseload, maintain accurate records and work effectively alongside external professionals.
- Full UK driving licence – a company vehicle will be available for work purposes.
TEAM LEADER OPPORTUNITIES For candidates interested in the Team Leader vacancies, the above experience and requirements will apply, alongside previous experience of overseeing, supervising or managing a small team within a supported housing environment.
