Position Title: Electronic Warfare and Sensors Engineer
Project: SEA 4000 Phase 6 - Hobart Class DDG Combat System Upgrade
Location: Adelaide - Osborne / Sydney
Reports To: Design Assurance Lead / Systems Engineering Lead Program Context
Summary: The Electronic Warfare and Sensors Engineer provides design assurance support for the EW and sensor suite elements of the DDG Combat System Upgrade, verifying that design outputs, interface definitions, and performance claims for radar, EW, and sensor subsystems meet specified requirements before progressing through design reviews and into integration and test.
Key Responsibilities: - Conduct independent design assurance review of EW and sensor subsystem designs (radar, electronic support measures, electronic countermeasures, identification systems) against functional performance specifications and interface control documents.
- Verify that sensor and EW design outputs are traceable to approved requirements, and that assumptions, analyses, and margins (detection range, frequency coverage, electromagnetic compatibility) are technically sound and adequately substantiated.
- Review integration of EW and sensor equipment with the Aegis Baseline 9 combat management system, supporting assessment of data flows, timing, and interface compatibility.
- Assess electromagnetic compatibility and electromagnetic environmental effects (EMC/E3) considerations across sensor, EW, and communications systems on the platform.
- Identify design risks, non-conformances, and open items related to EW and sensor performance; track these through resolution with design engineering teams.
- Support System Requirements Review, Preliminary Design Review, and Critical Design Review activities, providing design assurance input and technical evaluation reports for EW and sensor work packages.
- Contribute to verification and test planning for EW and sensor subsystems, including definition of acceptance criteria and review of test procedures and results.
- Prepare design assurance evidence and reports to support Commonwealth technical reviews, audits, and certification activities.
Required Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electronic, or Communications Engineering, or related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience in electronic warfare, radar, or sensor systems engineering, including design review or design assurance activities.
- Working knowledge of RF/microwave systems, radar principles, and electronic warfare fundamentals (detection, jamming, countermeasures).
- Understanding of EMC/E3 principles as applied to shipboard or platform- integrated sensor and EW systems.
- Experience with requirements traceability and verification methods; familiarity with DOORS, Jama, or equivalent tools.
- Strong analytical and technical writing skills, with ability to produce clear design assurance evaluation reports.
Preferred Qualifications: - Prior experience on Aegis Combat System programs, RAN platform upgrades, or naval EW/sensor integration projects.
- Familiarity with Aegis Weapon System architecture and naval combat management system interfaces.
- Experience conducting independent design assurance or verification and validation activities on complex defence electronic systems.
- Familiarity with NSSG / CASG technical review and certification processes.
Work Environment: Office/lab-based with periodic travel to Osborne Shipyard, Fleet Base East (Sydney), and combat system integration and test facilities to support design assurance reviews and verification activities.
SFIA Skills Sought:The production of network designs and design policies, strategies, architectures and documentation, covering voice, data, text, e-mail, facsimile and image, to support strategy and business requirements for connectivity, capacity, interfacing, security, resilience, recovery, access and remote access. This may incorporate all aspects of the communications infrastructure, internal and external, mobile, public and private, Internet, Intranet and call centres.
NTDS Level 5:Produces outline system designs and specifications, and overall architectures, topologies, configuration databases and design documentation of networks and networking technology within the organisation. Specifies user/system interfaces, including validation and error correction procedures, processing rules, access, security and audit controls. Assesses associated risks, and specifies recovery routines and contingency procedures. Translates logical designs into physical designs.
