This is a fantastic opportunity to join Raukūmara Pae Maunga as an Oranga Taiao Kaimahi, a hands-on field role delivering real, on-the-ground restoration mahi as part of one of the most significant ecological and cultural recovery programmes in Aotearoa.
Raukūmara Pae Maunga is addressing decades of neglect and taking decisive action to restore the mauri of Raukūmara, a mountain to sea forest ecosystem on the East Coast of the North Island. Guided by the kaupapa "Kia haumanu te mauri o te Raukūmara", the Trust is building a specialist team to implement large-scale ecosystem recovery at a landscape scale.
About the Role
Reporting to the Team Lead, the Oranga Taiao Kaimahi is responsible for delivering on-the-ground environmental and restoration activities, including pest control, monitoring and land care activities as outlined in the Taiao work plan. This role contributes directly to ecological regeneration, biodiversity protection, freshwater health and the practical expression of kaitiakitanga.
The Oranga Taiao Kaimahi is accountable for delivering high-quality fieldwork safely, accurately capturing operational data and working collaboratively across operational and engagement teams to uphold the tikanga and organisational values in all aspects of the mahi.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Delivering pest animal control through trapping, baiting, monitoring and follow-up activities in accordance with the Taiao work plan.
- Preparing sites for restoration and planting projects, including vegetation clearance, debris management and ground preparation.
- Undertaking native tree planting, revegetation, maintenance and monitoring to support biodiversity and ecosystem resilience.
- Identifying, managing and removing pest plant species using approved manual or chemical control methods.
- Undertaking species and results-based field monitoring, and accurately collecting and recording data for reporting and analysis.
- Clearing and maintaining tracks, accessways and field infrastructure to ensure safe and sustainable access.
- Maintaining tools, machinery, vehicles and equipment in good working order.
- Supporting 1080 operations on the ground, including monitoring and follow-up activities.
- Working collaboratively with other Oranga Taiao Kaimahi, Team Leads and wider operational teams.
About You
You will be a physically capable, safety-conscious and motivated field worker with a commitment to kaitiakitanga and a genuine desire to contribute to the restoration of a taonga landscape.
To be successful in this role, you will bring:
- Practical experience in environmental restoration, land care, pest control, trapping, forestry, farming or related outdoor industries.
- Experience undertaking field monitoring and recording environmental data.
- The ability to safely operate in rugged or remote terrain.
- A sound understanding of Health & Safety requirements in field-based environments.
- Physical fitness and the capability to undertake manual outdoor work.
- The ability to follow operational procedures and complete required documentation accurately.
- A commitment to tikanga Māori and kaupapa values in environmental delivery.
The following experience will be advantageous:
- Experience with pest plant control, including wilding conifers.
- Experience supporting 1080 operations.
- First Aid certification.
- Chainsaw, agrichemical, ATV/UTV or other relevant operational certifications.
- Experience working with freshwater monitoring or taonga species.
- Knowledge of the Raukūmara region and its communities.
