About the Role
Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Underwriter to join their established team in Brighton. This role focuses on underwriting commercial and charity sector, contributing to profitable growth while supporting broker relationships and trading activity. You will take ownership of a varied and interesting portfolio, applying sound technical judgement, strong trading acumen, and a proactive approach to broker engagement.
 
Key Responsibilities

• Underwrite and manage a portfolio of commercial and charity risks.
• Make informed underwriting decisions in line with risk appetite, authority levels, and governance standards.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers, driving new business and retention.
• Actively trade cases - including picking up the phone to negotiate terms, secure opportunities, and influence outcomes.
• Support the development of underwriting strategies and contribute to product and pricing discussions.
• Provide technical guidance to colleagues and contribute to continuous improvement within the team.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal underwriting controls.

Skills & Experience Required

• 5+ years' commercial underwriting experience (property, liability, or combined).
• Strong technical underwriting capability.
• Broker development experience or proven ability to build and maintain trading relationships.
• Demonstrable trading acumen - proactive, confident communicator who engages directly with brokers.
• Desirably have experience within the charity, faith, or not‑for‑profit sectors.
• Strong analytical skills, sound judgement, and the ability to balance risk and commerciality.
• Collaborative team player with a positive, solutions‑focused approach.
