Financial Accountant | Hybrid - South East London | £40-45,000 | Permanent, full-time
 
About the Role:
 
We are supporting a leading arts/higher education charity to recruit a Financial Accountant to join their finance team on a permanent basis. This role plays an important part in delivering effective financial operations, ensuring core accounting processes run smoothly and regulatory reporting requirements are met.
 
Reporting to the Head of Finance, the post holder will oversee key financial activities including ledger management, reconciliations, payroll, statutory reporting and the preparation of financial statements. The role also works closely with teams across the organisation to provide financial guidance, maintain robust controls and support accurate financial reporting for both internal stakeholders and external bodies.
 
Key Responsibilities:

• Support the Finance Officer by overseeing the purchase ledger and cash book.
• Review and authorise the weekly supplier payment run.
• Manage sales invoicing and credit control processes across commercial clients, donors and sponsors.
• Work with operational teams to support the collection of outstanding income and debts.
• Oversee the month-end close and ensure the effective operation of month-end accounting processes.
• Prepare and maintain balance sheet reconciliations and resolve outstanding queries.
• Ensure restricted funds are reconciled and that expenditure complies with funder restrictions.
• Maintain and manage the organisation's fixed asset register.
• Prepare accurate and timely financial reporting for external bodies and regulators.
• Support the preparation and production of annual financial statements and the subsequent audit process.
• Prepare quarterly VAT returns in line with the agreed partial exemption methodology.
• Prepare specialist financial calculations such as relevant tax relief claims where applicable.
• Manage the preparation of monthly payroll and pensions, ensuring payments are accurate and made on time.
• Ensure statutory payroll reporting requirements and year-end submissions are completed in line with regulatory obligations.
• Assist with the preparation of management accounts, forecasts and budget-holder reports.
• Contribute to the preparation of the annual budget and monitoring of financial performance against plan.
• Support the development of an effective internal control environment and ensure compliance with financial policies and procedures.
• Undertake additional duties as required to support the finance function

Experience & Qualifications:

• ACA / ACCA / CIMA qualified or part-qualified.
• Experience of ledger management and financial reconciliations.
• Experience preparing VAT returns, ideally including partial exemption methodology.
• Strong technical accounting knowledge and financial reporting capability.
• Understanding of payroll and pensions processes.
• Advanced Excel and strong IT skills.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain financial information to non-finance colleagues.
• Strong organisational skills and ability to manage workloads to deadlines.
• Positive, proactive and professional approach with a collaborative working style.
