The Role
ALS are recruiting for an Organic Chemistry Manager for the Coventry site.
The Organic Chemistry Manager is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the efficient, compliant, and high-quality operation of a busy analytical laboratory.
The role focuses on driving continuous improvement, managing resources and costs, and ensuring technical excellence to meet client and regulatory expectations. It also involves leading and developing a high-performing team while supporting cross-functional collaboration and innovation within the department.
Hours Per Week: 37
Days Per Week: Monday to Friday (08:00 – 16:00)
Contract: Full Time & Permanent
Annual Salary: £37,000 per annum
The day to day
- Ensure compliance with UK health & safety legislation to maintain a safe working environment.
- Maintain and improve the company’s quality system to meet legal, auditing, and procedural standards.
- Drive laboratory efficiency through capacity and process improvements while reducing production costs.
- Manage departmental budgets and resources to meet revenue and profit targets.
- Oversee client KPI performance to ensure high-quality analytical results that meet client expectations.
- Support staff development, technical capabilities, inductions, and compliance with HR and workplace regulations.
- Conduct technical reviews of non-conforming work (NCW), AQC investigations, method quality control charts, and proficiency testing (PT) performance.
- Approve quality control chart limits and review changes to quality documents, including procedures, methods, and supporting materials.
- Participate in the site on-call rota.
- Authorise test reports for Chemistry.
The Essentials - Strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills with the ability to remain calm under pressure.
- Proven experience in staff management, including motivation, coaching, and development.
- Ability to proactively identify and resolve issues, working effectively across functions.
- Skilled in implementing innovative solutions and improving laboratory procedures.
- Technically competent with auditors and regulators; able to critically evaluate scientific data.
- Extensive experience in high-volume laboratory operations, relevant accreditations (ISO 17025, MCERTS, etc.), and a science qualification (HND/HNC/Degree).
