The Role
As an Environmental Monitoring and Sampling Specialist, you will be responsible for conducting environmental monitoring and sampling activities across the UK, working with a diverse range of commercial and key account clients. Your work will align with ALS Laboratories’ high standards, policies, and ISO17025 accreditation.
You will play a critical role in meeting the needs of clients, from one-off projects to long-term contracts. This position requires significant travel using a temperature-controlled refrigerated van to reach sampling locations, which can range from private residences to industrial sites like landfills.

Location: Reading / Swindon / M4 Area
Hours: 37 per week, Monday to Friday (08:00–16:00) with occasional weekend standby and callout duties (paid additionally).
Contract Type: Permanent & Full-Time
Salary: Starting salary of £23,180
The day to day
Conduct sampling and monitoring of:
- Groundwater, surface water, trade effluent, wastewater, potable water, gas, legionella, and dust.
- Perform on-site field testing using calibrated scientific equipment.
- Accurately record and report data following ALS quality procedures.
- Ensure compliance with Health and Safety standards for ALS and clients.
- Safely transport samples while adhering to temperature control requirements.
- Drive long distances responsibly and in accordance with legal standards.
- Represent ALS Environmental professionally, maintaining positive client relationships.
- Participate in weekend on-call duties for drinking water sampling, as part of a standby rota.
The EssentialsWe are looking for someone who thrives in a dynamic environment and has the skills and mindset to deliver excellent service.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Willingness to travel across the UK, with occasional overnight stays.
- Highly organised and motivated with a strong work ethic.
- Familiarity with Health and Safety and Quality Management System guidelines.
- Full, clean UK driving licence.
- Previous experience in environmental monitoring (desirable but not essential).
