The Impact
 
Our client is transforming a complex commerce platform from a monolithic architecture into a Service-Based Architecture (SBA) supported by multiple autonomous product teams.
 
This role exists to ensure that scale and speed do not come at the cost of reliability or coherence. As Principal Software Engineer, you'll act as the architectural unifier—defining service standards, governing APIs, and enabling teams to move quickly without breaking each other.
 
Your work will directly influence platform stability, developer velocity, and long-term scalability.
 
The Role
 
You are the most senior individual contributor in the engineering organization, operating at the intersection of architecture, platform strategy, and developer experience.
 
You'll partner closely with engineering leadership and multiple product teams to define how services communicate, how APIs are governed, and how architectural standards are enforced through tooling rather than bureaucracy.
 
What You'll Do

• Design and evolve a Service-Based Architecture across core platform domains
• Define standards for API and event-driven communication
• Establish and enforce OpenAPI contracts and contract testing
• Reduce API sprawl and integration risk across teams
• Create shared service standards for authentication, logging, and events
• Partner with platform and DevEx teams to embed architectural guardrails into CI/CD
• Champion pragmatic use of AI-assisted development tools
• Communicate architectural trade-offs clearly to senior stakeholders

About You
Essential

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, operating at Staff or Principal level
• Deep expertise in Modern PHP (8.x) and Laravel, including performance optimisation
• Proven experience designing Service-Based or distributed architectures
• Strong background in API governance (OpenAPI, contract testing)
• Cloud-native experience on GCP or AWS
• Ability to lead through influence across multiple autonomous teams

Nice to Have

• API gateway experience (Kong, Apigee, GCP API Gateway)
• Event-driven systems (RabbitMQ, Pub/Sub)
• Experience in regulated environments (e.g. PCI-DSS, HIPAA)
