Backend Engineer - AI Platform (remote)


Our client is an early-stage, investor-backed AI startup building a next-generation AI agents platform designed to automate complex, document-heavy workflows across industries such as compliance, underwriting, and financial services. Their founding team brings experience from leading global tech companies and a previous successful startup exit.
They are looking for a Backend Engineer to join their core engineering team and help design, build, and operate the services powering their AI platform. This is a hands-on role tackling real engineering challenges: scalable agent orchestration, heavy I/O, bursty workloads, long-running jobs, and high reliability demands. You'll work closely with a senior technical founding team and have genuine influence over architecture, tooling, and engineering processes.
What You'll Do

• Build and operate backend services that power AI agent runs, data streaming, and workflow automation
• Develop performant, reliable systems for high-volume workloads
• Create clean, well-designed APIs for internal and customer-facing use
• Contribute to engineering processes, architectural decisions, and technical direction
• Work autonomously with a small, high-impact team

What We're Looking For

• 4+ years of Python software development and systems design
• Strong grounding in SQL, column-oriented databases, or distributed data systems
• Familiarity with modern AI models and how to apply them effectively
• Experience building well-tested, well-documented code
• Comfort deploying services on AWS/Azure/GCP using Docker, Kubernetes, and Terraform
• Ability to self-direct and deliver with minimal oversight

Nice to Have

• Experience with React, Redux, or Typescript
• Experience working in early-stage or fast-moving environments
