Job Description: A vacancy exists for a Professional Nurse Night Duty at a Retirement Home in Pinelands. Job Requirements:
Diploma / Degree in General nursing (registered with SANC)
Postgraduate qualification in geriatric would be advantageous
Previous experience in taking charge of a frail care unit Is essential
Work experience in a retirement home
Experience as a Sister in charge
Preferably recently retired or close to retirement age
Responsibilities: Optimal Resident Care by
Insisting on high standards of nursing care to meet the needs of the residents.
Planning and initiating nursing regimes to be carried out by junior nurses and according to ward night routine set out by Matron.
Carrying out procedures in accordance to the organisation policy and protocol.
Auditing resident’s records in the course of her work.
Providing a safe environment by eliminating medico-legal hazards.
Strict resident confidentiality.
Keeping herself and her subordinates up to date with advances in nursing care.
Acting as a role model.
Supporting the Matron and the Executive Chairman in their development of team spirit.
Organization of the maximum utilization of personnel on her shift.
Optimal management of her own time.
Supervision of time keeping.
Orientation of new personnel members.
Ensuring that she, and her subordinates, adhere to policies and SANC regulations.
Keeping record systems up-to-date.
Delegating duties in accordance with her subordinates’ scope of practice and capabilities.
Evaluating her subordinates continuously.
Demonstrating a cost-effective approach, which includes adherence to budgetary approach.
Motivating for changes in existing systems where necessary.
Keeping Matron and Management informed of relevant incidents and problems requiring attention.
Maintaining good interpersonal relationships with all the people she comes into contact with
Ensuring that the families and medical personnel are constantly aware of the condition of the residents’ and their needs.
Demonstrating flexibility and willingness to accept change.
Managing conflict in an appropriate manner.
Counselling personnel, relatives, and friends of residents.
Ensuring that she is up-to-date with activities/changes by attending meetings and reading written communications.
Refer enquiries for admission of residents to the Admissions Officer.
Special duties and responsibilities applicable to night duty
During the night-duty period, the Enrolled Nurse in the Care Centre is the senior staff member on the premises, and accordingly is in charge of the whole of the complex and ensuring that all problems are brought to the attention of Matron or the Executive Chairman.
If she encounters a problem of a sufficiently serious nature to so warrant, in the case of a medical problem she shall contact the Matron or the Executive Chairman to report the same and/or to obtain her or his advice or instructions.
She shall regularly carry out rounds of the whole premises, including the Cottages.
She will provide any necessary advice and support to the Staff-Nurse in Charge of the Home.
