A great opportunity for a Mobile Test Automation Engineer
Mobile Test Automation Engineer
About the company
A Sydney-based consumer technology business operating a large fleet of vehicles across the city, with a mobile app that sits at the centre of how customers access the service. Small, senior engineering team where quality sits alongside product rather than behind it. The app is the product, so the bar on release quality is high and visible.
About the role
Lead automation engineer for a mobile programme that moves a core part of the customer journey out of physical hardware and into the app itself. You own mobile test automation end to end: the framework, the strategy, the pipeline integration and the standards the rest of the team work to. You will be hands on writing scripts most days, and you will also be the person deciding what gets automated, what stays manual and what good looks like before anything ships.
Duties / Key responsibilities
- Build and extend automation frameworks for native iOS and Android
- Automate regression coverage across the app so releases stop leaning on manual effort
- Run suites in CI and keep them stable enough that people trust the results
- Test across real devices and device farms, not just simulators
- Automate the API and integration layers between app, backend and BFF
- Validate accessibility and analytics alongside functional coverage
- Set the QA process and lift the wider team's testing capability
- Work directly with product and engineering on release readiness and go/no-go calls
Who you are
You have done this before in a team small enough that there was nobody to hand the hard problems to.
You are comfortable being the most senior quality voice in the room and comfortable being wrong in front of engineers. You can say no to a release and explain why in a way that lands.
You write code properly. Frameworks you have built have outlived you at the places you have left. You care about test stability because you have lived with a flaky suite and know what it does to a team's trust.
You are interested in the messy edges of mobile, real devices, real network conditions, hardware that does not behave. That part appeals to you rather than putting you off.
Benefits
- Genuine ownership of automation strategy from day one, not inherited someone else's framework
- Highly visible programme with a clear commercial outcome attached
- Small senior team with short lines to product and engineering leadership
- Real device and hardware integration work that is hard to get elsewhere in this market
- Flexible hybrid working
- Direct influence on how the engineering team approaches quality
Skills and experience
- Strong native mobile automation experience across both iOS and Android
- Hands-on with Appium, XCUITest, Espresso, Barista or Maestro
- Coding depth in at least one of Kotlin, Swift, Java, TypeScript or Python
- Built an automation framework from scratch, not just maintained one
- API automation experience using REST Assured, Postman or similar
- CI/CD pipeline integration and test execution at scale
- Experience owning automation strategy rather than executing someone else's
- Device farm experience across BrowserStack, SauceLabs or AWS Device Farm
- Exposure to apps that interact with physical hardware or IoT devices- Analytics and accessibility validation experience
