Quality Engineer - Automation (Contract)
This is a large, ASX listed client midway through a serious digital transformation, rebuilding the customer-facing technology that millions of people use directly. The quality function sits at the centre of that work. Testing isn't an afterthought bolted on at the end, it's built into how every squad ships.
About the role
You'll be a Quality Engineer embedded in an agile squad, reporting to the Program Test Manager and working day to day with QE Leads, engineers, BAs, product owners and designers. The job is to make sure quality is designed in from the acceptance criteria up, not inspected in at the end. You'll own test coverage across your squad's work and have real say over how quality is judged.
Skills and experience
- 5 to 10 years across web, mobile and backend platforms, with 3 to 5 years in agile or scrum teams
- Strong functional and automated testing background, hands-on not theoretical
- Proficiency in Java, JavaScript or Kotlin, with Git or GitHub and solid CI/CD practice
- Hands-on with modern automation tools, in particular Playwright and Cypress, plus Rest Assured and monitoring tools like Splunk and Datadog
- Solid integration, system and end-to-end testing, with real test planning and defect management
- Clear communicator who can hold their own with technical and non-technical people alike
- Interest or experience in non-functional testing (performance, accessibility or security) is well regarded
- Familiarity with CI/CD tooling and automated deployment is a plus
Key responsibilities - Work with BAs and engineers to shape acceptance criteria that are testable, complete and automatable
- Write testing notes and test cases across multiple levels so coverage holds up end to end
- Build and maintain automation suites that keep pace with application and project changes
- Estimate test effort and own detailed test plans aligned to project requirements
- Drive squad ownership of quality and embed best practice inside the agile team
