Job Title: Structural Engineer
About the Company
We are partnering with a growing Australian-owned manufacturing business that designs and builds bespoke modular infrastructure and specialized industrial enclosures. Their engineered solutions power mission‑critical applications across mining, utilities, renewable energy, defence, and commercial sectors.
Operating out of advanced manufacturing and engineering facilities in Victoria, the company combines precision engineering, in‑house custom sheet metal fabrication, and advanced systems integration. Their focus on efficiency, quality, and tailored solutions has made them a trusted, leading name in the industry.
The Opportunity
To support a rapidly growing forward workload and strengthen in‑house engineering capabilities, we are seeking a Structural Detailer / Engineer to lead the structural design and detailing function for complex transportable buildings.
This role offers a unique opportunity to establish, shape, and grow the structural discipline within the business. You will work closely with multi-disciplinary teams—including electrical engineers, manufacturing teams, and project managers—on complex, highly technical builds. Additionally, you will assist the drafting team with sheet metal assemblies for laser cutting and other miscellaneous 3D models.
Role Overview
In this full-time, hands-on position, you will be responsible for the structural design and detailed drafting of transportable modular structures. This encompasses steel subfloors, columns, landings, stairs, lifting systems, and integrated mechanical components.
You will support projects through the entire lifecycle—from initial concept and tendering through to detailed design, fabrication support, and final delivery. Your technical expertise will be critical in ensuring all structures meet the highest standards of safety, compliance, manufacturability, and transportability.
Location: The position can be based at either of the company's offices in Northern Melbourne or Regional Victoria, with work performed primarily from the office. Occasional travel to the manufacturing facility will be required for full model reviews and team meetings.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce detailed structural models and fabrication drawings utilising Tekla Structures, Inventor, and AutoCAD.
- Develop structural designs and calculations for frames, chassis, lifting points, roof structures, and integrated mechanical assemblies.
- Review and coordinate structural requirements against architectural, electrical, mechanical, and civil drawings.
- Collaborate with internal engineering, fabrication, and project management teams across all project phases.
- Prepare comprehensive documentation for certification, engineering review, and compliance.
- Conduct structural assessments to properly account for transport, lifting, cranage, and installation forces.
- Liaise with independent structural engineers for design verification.
- Assist the wider drafting team with sheetmetal and general 3D modelling.
- Develop, maintain, and refine company standards for structural modelling, workflows, templates, and documentation.
- Drive value engineering, manufacturability improvements, and cost optimization.
- Provide technical troubleshooting and support to production and site installation teams.
Requirements - Proven experience as a Structural Detailer, Draftsperson, or Structural Engineer working heavily with steel structures or modular/transportable buildings.
- Strong proficiency in Tekla Structures, Inventor, and AutoCAD.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and produce architectural, structural, mechanical, and fabrication drawings.
- Deep practical understanding of steel fabrication, modular construction methods, and structural design principles.
- Exceptional attention to detail, prioritising accuracy, manufacturability, and quality.
- A proactive, solutions‑focused mindset with the initiative to build new capabilities and workflows from the ground up.
- Strong organizational and communication skills to manage multiple priorities across multi-disciplinary teams.
Relevant Qualifications: - Bachelor of Engineering (Civil/Structural) OR Diploma/Advanced Diploma in Engineering / Drafting.
- Highly regarded: Current registration with the National Engineering Register (NER).
Why Join? - Impact & Autonomy: Lead and build the structural engineering/detailing capability in-house.
- Stability: Secure, full-time role within a growing Australian business with a very strong pipeline of work.
- Projects: Work on diverse, technically challenging industrial projects across Australia.
- Culture: Join a professional, supportive engineering environment with modern workshops and fabrication facilities.
- Flexibility: Choice of primary work location (Northern Melbourne or Regional Victoria).
- Reward: Competitive salary package tailored to your experience, alongside ongoing training and development.
How to Apply If you have the technical capability and the initiative to establish and lead a structural design function, we encourage you to apply. Please submit:
- Your current resume.
- A brief cover letter outlining your specific experience with steel structures or modular builds.
- Examples or a portfolio of work demonstrating your detailing or engineering capabilities.
Applications will be reviewed as they are received.
