R&D Machinist | Prototype & Bespoke Deep Tech Startup | Sydney Inner West

Most machinist jobs are about repetition: Set up. Run. Repeat 500 times. Check the bin.
This is not one of those jobs.
We are a Deep Tech startup building world-first hardware (think high-voltage reactors and complex energy systems). We don't have a production line. We have a lab, a team of PhD engineers, and a constant stream of "Version 1.0" problems that need physical solutions.

The Role: Why this is different

• Serial Number 001 Only: You will almost never make the same part twice. You are building prototypes, test rigs, and custom housings.
• Embed with Engineering: You aren't just receiving drawings; you are consulting on them. Engineers will come to you with a problem and you will help them design for manufacture.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Programming & Machining: Taking complex 3D models (SolidWorks/step) and generating your own toolpaths for CNC Mills and Lathes.
• Rapid Prototyping: Turning a design concept into a functional metal part in hours, not days.
• Material Variety: Working with everything from Aluminium and Stainless to engineering plastics and exotic alloys required for thermal/high-voltage applications.
• Process Feedback: advising the design team on tolerances, surface finishes, and geometry to make future versions better/cheaper/faster.

Who You Are

• A "First Class" Machinist: You have a Trade Qualification, but more importantly, you have "finesse." You can hold tight tolerances on a one-off part without needing a warm-up run.
• CAM Proficient: You don't need a programmer; you are the programmer. You are comfortable working directly from 3D CAD data.
• A Problem Solver: When you see a "impossible" undercut or feature, you don't just say "can't do it" - you figure out a fixture or a 5-axis strategy to get it done.
• Engineering-Literate: You can speak "Engineer." You understand fit, form, and function, and you’re comfortable sketching ideas on a whiteboard.
