An Australian R&D and manufacturing company developing advanced laser and optical technologies is expanding its team and is now hiring an Optical Engineer to support the design and development of innovative devices and fabrication systems.

You will work closely with senior engineers to design and set up optical circuits, develop laser processing solutions, and contribute to hardware/software integration for cutting-edge applications. The role offers the opportunity to work on impactful technologies while collaborating with leading universities and research partners.

This is a full-time position based in Melbourne. Visa sponsorship is available for qualified candidates.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, and test optical circuits and laser processing setups.
• Develop solutions for optical device fabrication, including chips, fibre sensors, and waveguides.
• Conduct laboratory experiments and refine optical systems through hardware tuning and optimisation.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate hardware and software systems.
• Document designs, test plans, and project outcomes for internal and customer reporting.
• Provide technical input on solution design, costing, and product development roadmaps.

Requirements

• Hands-on experience designing and setting up optical systems in a laboratory environment.
• Proven track record working with lasers or ultrafast laser manufacturing solutions.
• Strong knowledge of optical hardware and system integration techniques.
• Proficiency in troubleshooting and optimising complex optical setups.
• Excellent communication and documentation skills for technical reporting.

Desirable but not essential

• Experience in photonics, semiconductor technologies, or related fields.
• Familiarity with optical simulation software (e.g., Zemax, COMSOL).
• Exposure to research or product development environments involving optical systems.
